Former Northern Kentucky Athletic Director Admits to Stealing $311,000

Scott-Eaton-jpg

Former Northern Kentucky University Athletic Director Scott Eaton seemed to be on quite the roll. Under his leadership, NKU made the transition into Division I and the school has risen dramatically in prestige in the athletic community. But things have fallen apart. He was fired last year from the University for “inappropriate relationships” with employees and a student and now the hammer has hit again. Eaton has admitted to stealing over $311,000 from the University over the course of six years. His method of stealing was to use the NKU credit card, charge various items and then keep the proceeds for himself. The largest use was to buy over $262,000 in Kroger gift cards, all of which he spent on himself. He was caught after an audit of his practices following his dismissal from the University and now he faces the possibility of criminal charges.

Not exactly the type of ending to Eaton’s career he had to have imagined. But the question for me…how did he spend $262,000 in Kroger gift cards? I know its six years, but that seems like a lot of groceries, especially since they were gift cards to the store itself. My man likes to eat…

UPDATE: Just tonight, Eaton accepted a plea deal of ten years in state prison. In this case, it did not pay to go Krogering…

Yes you can use it on gas, which might account for $3-4K a year, but no supermarket will allow you to use a gift card to buy another gift card.

More likely he is selling them to one of those websites that buys gift cards or using them to buy drugs (look up stories about drug dealers accepting gift cards as payment).

I’m from NKY and knew him from going to school with his son. He is one of the last people I would have ever thought would do anything like this.

Have no fear, NKU already has a new AD in line, Richie Farmer will be taking over in about 24 months or so but until then Eric Conn will be the interterm AD.

Selling and buying gift cards for cash is a robust, above ground, and legal transaction. You can sell any gift card for approximately 60% of its value and walk away with money in your pocket. It would be very easy to rationalize selling the girt cards is legitimate if you think someone else is paying the credit card bill and they have told you it was yours to use. That may be what he was thinking.

10 years is a terrible plea deal for Eaton. The problem is that he didn’t steal enough. Look at CEOs and boards of big banks, mortgage companies and Wall St jackasses who leveraged way over their heads wrecking the whole US economy. They stole billions in the bailout. No one went to prison.

Ten years seems kinda harsh, I don’t understand why non violent offenders who are really not much of a threat to society are caged up like animals. Paying back what he owes plus interest and a great deal of community service would have actually benefited the community. Instead for ten years this man will be a further drain on it instead. Makes no sense. In general, rather than deal with the root of our problems., it seems power likes to “punish” the less powerful and the crowd lines up to throw stones. Much like taking a pill when you should really be changing your diet/habits, etc. But that’s just the way we are…

And why do you think the bankers get away with the things they do? Because they are power. They control society. The banks and all those mortgage companies and business that got bigger than anything ever should own us. Us “lesser” people are no more than some character in a Sims game to them. Greed and power run the world, people. Yes, I believe in a free market. I believe in capitalism, but I’m not so naive that I can’t see the whole thing is rigged.
