KSR Show Thread, 6/11: The One Hit Wonders Bracket

On this morning’s edition of the Kentucky Sports Radio radio show, we will spend two hours debating the greatest One Hit Wonders throughout history. The 32-song field was determined by a collection of lists from reputable publications like Rolling Stone magazine, USA Today and VH1, in addition to a couple random lists that appear to be one anonymous person’s opinion but have prominent spots on a Google search.

That list was split into two sides, songs from 1970-1989 and songs from 1990 through today, and then thrown into a randomizer to determine the order of appearance on the bracket. The field is not seeded, only divided into two eras and thrown together into KSR’s first ever One Hit Wonder tournament. (Songs from the 1960s, sorry. Maybe next year.)

Now for why we’re doing this: Ryan Lemond, Shannon The Dude and I will be joined by Lee Cruse and Hayley Harmon as guest hosts for the show, and because they did so well in the food bracket last year, we decided we needed another bracket.

And this is it…

Follow along beginning at 10 a.m.

Oh man you guys missed some good ones…Tub Thumpin’ by Chumawamba is one. But your bracket is pretty darn good!

Looks like obvious front runners would be Play that Funky Music, Funky Town, Jump Around and Ice Ice Baby. Sir Mix a Lot wasnt a one hit wonder.

Every time I see one of these “one-hit wonder” lists it always has 2-3 entries that enrage music fans who listen beyond the mainstream, top 40 trash and know actual music. While the Crash Test Dummies and House of Pain are pretty bad, Sir Mix A Lot is just egregious. Before the Mtv crowd (thank God it lost its relevance when it stopped playing videos) latched onto “Baby Got Back,” he had many songs that were much better. Remember “Swass,” “Beepers,” “Vapors,” “Posse on Broadway,” his cover of “Iron Man” featuring Metal Church,” and OF COURSE the best of all “Buttermilk Biscuits?!” Overall the bracket isn’t terrible but the next time you do one of these check out REAL reputable sources instead of rags like Rolling Stone.

But I guess some of the issue comes with the definition of “One Hit Wonder”. Some of the songs you mention would be unknown to people who don’t specifically listen to that genre. Much like some of the older rock stuff that I posted.

Well, since 867-5309/Jenny is not on there, I’ll take Brandy You’re a Fine Girl by Looking Glass. Another was The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia by Vicki Lawrence; she was mainly a TV comedienne.
Here’s one from the ’50’s, later recorded by the Jacksons,

rg, when I checked out your link, I saw this version of “Undone” that he did with Randy Bachman. I think Burton had one of the most underrated voices in rock and roll.

Yep, Bluehender; death songs were big in the ’50’s and ’60’s. Teen Angel by Mark Dinning was another that went to No. 1.
RCF, yep it’s odd to even mention The Guess Who in this thread.

We have a throwback AOR station in Montgomery. It’s pretty good, but some stuff they play, I think, “Yeah, there’s a reason that wasn’t a hit single”.

What’s REALLY great is every day they have “Live at Lunch”, and everything they play is…TAH DAHHHHH…you guessed it, live cuts. Most are terrific, but again, some live stuff makes you realize that the studio cuts had session backup singers, when the real band’s *coughcough* “harmonies” are pitchy shrieking more than singing.

Is rock and roll dead? Seriously, you can’t even find a radio station in Louisville that plays new music from the genre. Pop, R&B, Hip Hop and Bro Country have taken over the airwaves. It’s kind of sad for a dinosaur like me.

    • ClutchCargo
      11:31 am June 11, 2020 Permalink

I have often thought the same thing. Rock radio has really taken a dive since the 90’s.

    • ClutchCargo
      11:36 am June 11, 2020 Permalink

I was never really into grunge back in its heyday, but a lot of pretty good stuff from the 90’s kind of fits that genre. I have taken to listening to a 90’s rock station on Pandora while working out at home. I have heard the Alice in Chains song “Rooster” about a million times, but never really LISTENED to it until recently. I never realized it was about one of the band members’ dad who was really messed up with PTSD from Vietnam. Now it hits me right in the feels every time I hear it.

    • UKJon in Knoxville
      11:49 am June 11, 2020 Permalink

I know it’s not exactly rock but there is a lot of great Progressive Rock still being made so I assume there are a lot of rock band out there that don’t get radio play.

Clutch, I wasn’t into grunge very much until I met the Mrs, and she got me hooked on it. Now it’s some of my favorite stuff. AIC, STP, SoundGarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Foo Fighters – all can be heard blaring from my boat during the summer. It’s funny now that whenever a Foo Fighters song comes on the radio, my kids say it reminds them of being out on the boat.
