Five-star DL Mykel Williams plans to visit Kentucky

As Kentucky has begun to place less emphasis on South Florida in recruiting, the Deep South has become a major recruiting area. The Wildcats have been able to dip into Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi in the last two recruiting classes. Kentucky has landed a signature from a blue-chip recruit in each state.

Now the Wildcats are big game hunting near the Georgia-Alabama border.

Mykel Williams is a top-25 player in the class of 2022 and the defensive line prospect is hearing from every major program in college football. The All-American Bowl selection spoke with Adam Gorney of Rivals this week to announce visit plans. The blue-chipper plans to get up to Kentucky eventually.

Recruits all over the country are currently planning to get back on the road and take official visits in June. It looks like the Wildcats could join Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and USC in getting the blue-chipper on their campus. Williams plans to take as many visits as he can.

“A lot of visits,” Williams told Rivals. “I’m going to see a lot of places, as many as I can. I’ll probably see a new place every few days.”

The Columbus (Ga.) Hardaway prospect realized a top-10 three months ago and the Wildcats made the cut. Kentucky had the high-profile recruit on campus last March for a visit before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. While in Lexington, the coaching staff issued an offer. Defensive line coach Anwar Stewart is working on building a relationship with Williams.

“Me and coach Stewart and some other coaches, we talk a lot, and I really connect with those guys as well,” Williams told Rivals.

Stewart is beginning to make a name for himself recruiting the Peach State for the Wildcats. The former Kentucky defensive end scored a late commitment from a couple of Atlanta area natives recently. In the class of 2021, Devonte Ross out of Cartersville High joined the party late and top-500 cornerback Andre Stewart out of Brookwood High pledged to the Wildcats for the class of 2022 after previously being committed to Auburn. The second-year defensive line coach is making some waves on the recruiting trail.

Mark Stoops’ program has a recruiting brand that is continuing to grow in the SEC footprint. Now the Wildcats are becoming players for Deep South prospects with some legit intraconference competition. The crystal ball trends heavily for Georgia at the moment, but Kentucky is taking their swings and swimming in the right waters.

I would like to see Coach Stoops find a place for Randy Clements if possible. Been an excellent Coach everywhere he has been. Ole Miss led the conference last year in rushing, his first season coaching the line. He done a really good job at Baylor and Houston in the 10+ years before that.

One of these days being listed with these teams is going to really pay off. I seriously believe that’s why we have 4 stars committed and more on rhe way.

I would think other kids look at it as, if that guy is looking at Kentucky maybe I should hear them out or if Kentucky is good enough for them to play at why not me. Can’t ever be a bad thing to have your name out there with the big time recruits that’s for sure.

It’s great to see the sea change in culture Stoops has brought. I’m not a football fan, but it’s easy to see he’s completely turned UK into something most people never thought it would be. What’s crazy is there are SO many people around here who want him fired! Where have a I heard that before?? Hmmmm. People need to appreciate what they have before it’s gone.

Dating myself but I turn 50 this year. I was raised in Kentucky and have faithfully been a part of BBN my whole life, supporting all of UK athletics, good times and bad. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would ever be able to get interest (let alone LOI’s) from football players over the likes of Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Michigan, Georgia, etc. Folks, that is exactly what we are seeing now and we have Stoops, Marrow and company to thank. It all started with player development (I.e. Josh Allen and Benny Snell) to show these guys we have something special brewing. Unbelievably proud of this program…we’ve shown flashes of brilliance in the past but these last few years have seen more and more excellence. Hopefully we keep going in the same direction and make UK football the gold standard as well!

Rivals has him 100% to Georgia with him showing the same interest with us as Marshall so I don’t think we need to get too excited but it is refreshing that our recruiting has gone to the next level.

Rivals doesn’t update the “Prospect’s Interest” tracker very often. To extend your logic, Williams has the same level of interest in Marshall as he does in Alabama and Clemson. But the only thing that matter is Williams dropped a Top 10 and UK is in there. Will UK get him? Doubtful, but there is a 1 in 10 chance and that’s a helluva lot better than no chance. When Stoops arrived UK was dueling with schools like Furman, Ball State and Charlotte for most of their recruits. Now we’re starting to fight in the heavyweight division.

Clearly you haven’t listened to a single interview the young man has given. He mentions UK as places he definitely wants to visit. He has never mentioned Marshall. Might want to rethink how you draw conclusions.

Recruiting in football has continually improved each and every year under stoops. In another 4 or 5 years we will be in the top half of sec each and every year
