A fantastic first half was followed up with a miserable 20 minutes and an injury scare to Kentucky’s star player.
Nearly blowing a 16-point halftime lead, the No. 13 Kentucky Wildcats (16-3) women’s basketball team were able to fend off a pesky Auburn Tigers squad (7-11) in what was the team’s first game back in over a week.
Rhyne Howard had an off shooting night that was coupled with an injury to her non-shooting hand, forcing her to the locker room for a brief stint in the second half. She came back and finished the game with 10 points, five rebounds, four assists, one block, and three steals. However, she shot just 3-13 from the floor and 1-7 from beyond the arc.
The ‘Cats were paced by 17 points from Sabrina Haines, who shot 4-8 from deep while hauling in five rebounds. KeKe McKinney was the third and final Wildcat to finish with double-figures, dropping 13 points on 6-6 shooting in her first game back since Jan. 5.
Five other Kentucky players scored and the ‘Cats shot a combined 24-56 (42.9 percent) from the field and 11-28 (39.3 percent) from three. UK forced Auburn into 26 team turnovers. Kentucky is now 10-0 in Memorial Coliseum this season.
I’ll be back shortly with a full game recap, but for now, keep yourself occupied with the complete box score.
