Every incoming UK Freshman will receive a free iPad Air

It’s good to be a UK student.

Before incoming freshmen move into their spacious new dorms in the fall of 2019 to sleep on their Tempur-Pedic beds, they’ll receive a brand new iPad Air, Apple Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil. Who needs to buy a new laptop when you can just get a free $500 iPad?

The new iPads are a part of UK’s new “Smart Campus” initiative. Costing $1.5 million, the goal is to ease a student’s transition into college and keep them there until they graduate. Eli Capilouto said in a statement:

“Placing student success at the center of all that we do guides our work. We know students’ persistence is impacted by health and wellness, financial stability, academic preparation and belonging. Through leveraging the power of technology, we can address these obstacles across multiple platforms with a cutting-edge digital suite of tools — beginning with providing iPad to incoming students.”

Every person who lived in the Kirwin-Blanding responded, “Are you kidding me?”

My thoughts exactly. $25K/year. Does not equate to “free” anything.

Or they could just lower tuition? This is dumb.

      Indeed.
Honestly, what kid who is going to college doesn’t already have a smartphone and tablet?

Maybe we should have given out watches and calculators in 1988…because, technology.

This costs money, which eventually the students will have to cover the increased tuition via student loans. Politicians will make promises to forgive student loans, rather than fix the real problem: the fact that tuition is sharply rising due to every college needing to spend ridiculous amounts to keep up with others. Fix the real problem: stupid stuff like this, amazing gyms for regular students, and make your well-compensated professors teach more than three or four classes.

And before you think I’m an old curmudgeon, I graduated from undergrad three years ago. I saw all of this first hand.

Not “free” as much as “included with their tuition”.

I’m sure there is a ‘technology fee’ on top of tuition that’s substantially more than $500. I don’t think the university is gonna go broke.

I wonder why tuition is at an alltime high, I mean it’s not like colleges increase tuition in order to purchase unnecessary and extravagant things to entice 18 year olds to go there right?

Nothing is free. Your paying for it in constant tuition hikes.

Free? Did Apple just “give” them to UK? Almost nothing is “free” someone, somewhere at sometime has or will pay for it. It’s another example of the escalating race to attract kids to a particular school. Next will be a competing school “giving” kids MacBooks. And shortly after that tuition will go up, again and everyone will be “shocked”.

Nick Roush and the whole KSR staff are socialist loving liberals, so kinda makes sense that they don’t mention high tuition cost or anything. Just more “free” handouts. Sad what this site has become.

The problem is that the main contacts at the university are also “socialism-loving liberals”, like Eli C., Who doesn’t comprehend basic economics, and like Coach Cal, sad to say, and so the KSR engine is set up with friendly sources.

Now, imagine a Libertarian or constitution-upholding owner of “KSR”. His business wouldn’t have a shot at working with government-owned entities. Lol. You gotta serve the “party”!

Socialism at its finest! Increase tuition by $1000 then I give you free iPad we bought in bulk for $200. And you gotta keep paying that increased tuition every semester but only get one iPad! Smh

      Great one liner!

Our socialist government, now revered as God, produces its offspring. It raises its own from cradle to grave and demands fealty to it, or it will violently punish you. Pay it, obey it, or suffer god’s wrath.

I’d be curious to know where the money comes from. It doesn’t have to automatically be funded by tuition. Could be from donations and grants. I’d also be curious if the iPad might be a replacement for some physical books. I believe you’re able to get some books in PDF form, and likely in other, more interactive ways. I’d hope this could offset some book costs and weight.

Students can already get digital books. This won’t change that.

As a graduating college senior, I can confirm that iPads for academics are useless, but I guess this is what it takes to attract good students when your school’s academics suck. Duke freshmen have hall bathrooms and glorified cots to sleep on. So hey, UK will probably skim off a couple more smart kids from better schools now.

Also those of you whining about “socialism” need to get a life. A f*ck*ng university is not capable of enacting “socialism.” Although the existence of public universities is arguably socialist, and I do NOT see anyone clamoring for the University to be shuttered. Jesus Christ, you people are hysterical.

I can’t like this comment enough! All freshman need to experience a pulled fire alarm 3X per week in the winter at 2am where you have to use the steps from the 15th floor.

This isn’t socialism, this is unneeded spending. This could have been used on tearing down the kirwan blanding complex, making much needed green space, or more parking. And to all people complaining on how you all got cots with holes in them, you also paid a quarter of what we do.

  19. Alex90
    8:46 pm April 30, 2019 Permalink

Over half of the freshman would already have one already anyway. How about you pay for all their books to be put on that IPad and you’ve got something. Also could’ve had mad it free if they do like 10 hours of volunteer work around the school or something.

Kirwin-Blanding? Pffft. That would have been cake. I spent two semesters in the mid 90s in the original Haggin Hall. In the winter it would be 50 degrees on the first floor and 80 on the top floor.
