ESPN predicts Kentucky will only get one more elite recruit

The early signing period started yesterday, and if you trust ESPN’s Jeff Borzello, Kentucky will only add one more elite uncommitted prospect to its 2019 recruiting class. Borzello has John Calipari missing out on James Wiseman, Vernon Carey, Isaiah Stewart, Jaden McDaniels, and Matthew Hurt, but landing five-star small forward Keion Brooks. He sets his confidence level in that prediction at 40 percent.

“Could Brooks decide soon? He will take his final official visit this weekend, to Michigan State, at which point he will have visited the Spartans, Indiana, Kentucky, UCLA and North Carolina. Most of the recent buzz has centered around Indiana and Kentucky, with Michigan State sitting in third. Kentucky will have to convince him he can co-exist with Kahlil Whitney and Dontaie Allen, while Indiana is hoping to keep him home.”

Borzello’s picks for Kentucky’s top targets and his corresponding confidence level:

  • James Wiseman: Memphis (55%)
  • Vernon Carey: Michigan State: (35%)
  • Isaiah Stewart: Michigan State (40%)
  • Jaden McDaniels (no Kentucky offer yet): Washington (40%)
  • Matthew Hurt: Kansas (25%)

Let’s just hope Wiseman waits until the spring to decide. For KSR’s latest intel, read TJ’s Insider Notes from Monday.

Carey, Stewart, and Cole are headed to duke. Another 3 of top 5 recruiting class. Meanwhile UK will have 3SFs and a PG. considering the low probability UK loses any of its top 4 guards there’s gonna be a crowded back court and nick Richards as only front court player. EJ, PJ, Reed will be gone. Nick might leave too. Hard to teach big and tall.

Top 4 guards not including Johnson, he’s gone too.

Jiminy, you do know that Cole Anthony CUT Duke from his list a week or two ago right??

Let’s just face it, Cal has lost his mojo. Kids have seen him only winning one time with all those athletes we’ve had so they know they can go somewhere else and win too. Cal thinks Kentucky means something and it doesnt to most. He needs to start offering kids sooner and going after 4 star guys as well and making them feel a priority. Look how SGA worked out.

You mean the four star recruit that was committed to FL and flipped as soon as Cal/KY showed interest??? Kinda blows your own ridiculous theory about “going after kids sooner” (whatever that means, he’s got scholarship offers out to 2021 class already…) out of the water, doesn’t it?

How many 4 stars he after his year? Or any other year? That’s my point. And he finally is offering guys sooner…in his 10th season! Why you think Reddish was a lock to Duke? K called him in the locker room after they won it 2015! Cal has been losing in the recruiting game and he is just NOW making those changes.

Yeah let’s go after lesser talent. That makes a lot of sense.

Cal got fat and happy the last few years, lost his fastball recruiting and these other schools have caught up to him. I’m afraid the legacy of the Cal era 50 years from now is going to be “how did we only win one title over that time span with all that talent?”

If you aren’t a great in game coach, or X’s and O’s guy, you dang well better have the best players. Cal doesn’t have that anymore and he doesn’t have that fire in his belly anymore.

Yeah, I think the same think we may get one more 5 Star player. We may only lose 2 players off this year team, I see the rest coming back

We are losing Travis (graduates) and Johnson (lottery pick) no question, probably Montgomery too.

Herro and Quickley will be back. The rest of the guys? Who knows? PJ and Richards are probably gone even if they aren’t ready, but maybe not.

These recruiting analyst are simply guessing haha. People pegged Terrence Jones to go to Washington and that it was a done deal. Hell he even committed to them in a ceremony with his friend also committing there. Next day he flips to UK. Needless to say, recruiting is a crapshoot. Some 5 stars won’t workout, some 4 stars will become great. Just part of it. Let’s just root on whoever it is we get.

Some of it is that these elite recruits just haven’t panned out whether it’s coaching or just there attitude or inability. Labissare Richard’s are two examples. What I blame Cal for is the good players that either transfer and are good. Chris Matthew’s is a good example. Kyle Weilzer. And ones he won’t sign like Moses Brown.

There’s such uncertainty in his predictions. Based on those uncertainties there’s much room for error. Looks like 1 or 2 could wear blue for us. Also doubt Keion will be one of them.

Wow. Looking at responses. Somebody voices an opinion that is negative and you want to jump off a building. For one, Borzello’s odds of his own prediction coming true based on his own certainty is less than 5%. Oh my god! The world is caving in!

Comments here are gold. Cal lost his edge, we suck, etc. Guys, don’t ever change, I for one love getting made fun of by other fan bases on how negative and vile our fan base is…this kind of stuff just proves them right.

Yep. “Cal doesn’t have that fire in his belly anymore” with the #2 recruiting class.

We’ll lose Richards, Washington, Johnson, Travis, Herro, and Hagans. We’ve played 3 games people, THREE! Give those guys 30-35 more games and then get back with me.

Agree that Cal got the #2 recruiting class in the country, but look what he did with it against Duke. A 34 point loss on national television that looked worse than the score indicated. This is my theory: Cal is very slow to put the pieces together. Happens every year. The conventional wisdom is that it takes the players almost a full regular season to “get it.” I am thinking that it is Cal who plods along until he finally figures it out. How is it that Duke was a younger, less experienced team, but they hit the ground running while we were lost in a fog? Coaching.
