Could Jamin Davis be the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year? ESPN is telling us there’s a chance.
The Worldwide Leader has projected stats for the top rookies from the 2021 draft class. Of course, this exercise was primarily used to gas up Trevor Lawrence and the talented group of wide receivers taken, but there’s a nice footnote for UK fans near the end of the article. ESPN predicts Davis will have 108 tackles in his debut season for the Washington Football Team.
“Davis has a path to a full-time role in Washington after Jon Bostic played 93% of the snaps in 2020,” says senior writer Mike Clay.
In the rookie pecking order, Clay believes Davis will be the third-best tackler, behind the Cardinals’ Zaven Collins and Cowboys’ Micah Parsons. Of the top three rookies, Collins is the only one guaranteed to start on day one. If the former Wildcat can continue to find his way into passing lanes, he could end up fulfilling a pre-Draft prophecy.
The NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah was Davis’ biggest fan, often comparing him to the 2018 NFL Defensive Rookie fo the Year. “(Davis) looks so much like Darius Leonard when you study him,” Jeremiah said in a conference call with reporters. “You saw the impact that Darius Leonard had as a rookie coming out of the second round.”
If Davis finds his way into the rotation, there’s plenty of batting value to make a futures bet on Defensive Rookie of the Year. Things appear to be lining up nicely for the former Kentucky star.
