Eric Crawford names Matt Jones one of his Sports People of the Year

Eric Crawford of WDRB named his sports people of the year for 2015 and Matt Jones made the list in a shocking upset.

Crawford, who is one of the few people KSR gets along with, went against the media grain and congratulated Matt on his big year. When most people in the field prefer to pretend Matt and KSR don’t exist, Crawford not only acknowledged him, he had very kind words to say:

3. MATT JONES. Some of you seeing that name here will hate it. Some will love it. But put aside all of the emotion the founder of Kentucky Sports Radio generates with his Wildcat-centric pronouncements and you’ll realize, it was a heck of a year for Jones.

I daresay he never imagined when he started posting on message boards and blogging as just another passionate University of Kentucky fan that he would wind up in the place he is today, as head of a Big Blue media empire of the likes that Oscar Combs built with The Cats’ Pause magazine, back when print ruled the media scene. With his KSR radio program and website, Jones has ascended to chief spokesman for one of the largest and most passionate college fan bases in all of sports.

But this year, he took a large cultural leap… [more]

Matt is joined by Katie George, a UofL volleyball player and the current Miss Kentucky USA; as well as Bob Baffert and his Triple Crown-winning horse, American Pharoah.

Congratulations to Uncle Matt. Eric is usually one of the more reasonable Louisville sports writers. He obviously has some close connections with the UofL program, through his writing relationship with Pitino. Yet, Eric has historically been objective and often complimentary when covering The Cats.
KSR has definitely had a big year. Way to go guys. Strike while the iron is hot.

Agreed. Eric Crawford is an outstanding writer and a reasonable and honest human which actually comes across in his work product. He’s a gifted journalist. And, he always means well. Wish he was a die hard KENTUCKY fan; but then again not as he is the most considerate LOUISVILLE fan on record.

I’m not hating, but Matt better hope that Cal stays at UK forever; Cal is the straw that stirs the KSR drink.

The regimes of both Gillespie and Cal have been very, very good for KSR. I am all for it.

I disagree. Controversy is what stirs the media. The roller coaster of UK sports is what makes KSR.

UKBlue1 acts like if Cal leaves, BBN will stop following UK sports. Ha!

She must be new around here….

It’s so ironic that uber-liberal Matt played such a key role in giving Kentucky a Tea Party Governor…

The most educated cities/counties in the state did not vote for Bevin. That should tell you all you need to know.

Ah. Yeah. That must be why we rank so low nationally against other states.

Lexington ranks 10th among US cities in percent of population with college degree or higher. while the state as a whole ranks 47th in the nation in percentage of residents with a bachelor’s degree and an adult illiteracy rate of about 40%…

      Weird.

Yes, nearly HALF OF THE STATE’S POPULATION CAN’T READ.

Oldham is the wealthiest county in the state. It ranks second in the percentage of residents with a college degree. Oldham County voted for Bevin 60-35%. Happy New Year.

UK BB – i don’t think there is an argument about Lexington being well educated, or about the woes of the remainder of the state. That’s the tricky thing about democracy; it’s just too damn democratic for folks’ taste. Often, it’s the taste of the highly educated that is out of synch with the will of the people…not always, but it seems so in this instance.

That’s all the politics you’ll get from me – Go Big Blue.

Eric Crawford is a lot like his dad Byron, who belongs in the Kentucky journalism Hall of Fame, if there is one. If intelligence or education level can be determined by the results of the Governors election, I guess “Big Board” assumes that our stupidity came on us all of a sudden. Prior to this year, Democrats had won all but two of the past eighteen Governors elections. ,
