Duke insider isn’t confident Duke will land Bolden

John Watson of the Devils Den was interviewed by another Duke website, DukeReport.com, for a little insight into the Marques Bolden situation. Watson admitted he isn’t sure which way Bolden is leaning, but said it’s hard to think Duke has the inside track at this time.

From the DukeReport.com interview:

What’s your prediction for where Marques Bolden will be playing next season?

I honestly am not sure. And I don’t know that he is either. But if you look at all the pieces, it’s kind of hard to think Duke has the inside track. The Blue Devils have room for him next year with 12 scholarship players. Kentucky doesn’t have room unless Marcus Lee doesn’t come back to Lexington. So, it seems to follow that if Duke was his top choice and if they had sold him on becoming a Blue Devil, what is there to wait for? Conversely, if his top choice is or was Kentucky, he’d have to wait to see what Lee is going to do before he could even commit. That’s just me trying to put the pieces together as best I can, but as you noted earlier, this has been an odd recruitment. [DukeReport.com]

Sometimes it’s good to hear the perspective from the other side, especially when it’s positive for our own side, as is the case here.

That said, who really knows anything?

Could someone explain to him that EJ doesn’t need a scholarship? Come on down there’s room for you.

Marcus Lee, Charles Matthews, Mychal Mulder, Isiah Briscoe, Tai Wynyard, Isaac Humphries, EJ Floreal, Dominique Hawkins, Derek Willis = 9. De’aaron Fox, Malik Monk, Bam Adebayo, Wenyen Gabriel, Sacha Killeya-Jones = 5. So in total there are 14 scholarships used next year, EJ has to drop his scholarship just to keep the kids that are coming in on scholarship so that is already happening. They have to free up another one if they want Bolden.

Wait, we don’t have a scholarship for him? He’s been offered right? Is EJ on deck to give up his scholarship if he commits (as the commenter said above)?

If Lee and Briscoe come back, we’d have to make room for Bolden, even with EJ giving up his scholly. Lee, Briscoe, Willis, Hawkins, Humphries, Matthews, Wynyard, Mulder, Fox, Bam, SKJ, Monk, and Gabriel.

That’s why Lee isn’t coming back.

We will find a scholarship if he wants to be here even if Lee comes back.
