Drew Barker recruiting hard in San Antonio; two new names on his radar

barker-elam

@Mansell247

The trip to San Antonio isn’t just about playing in the Army All-American Bowl, at least for Drew Barker. KSR is hearing the UK quarterback signee is actively recruiting other players to join him in Lexington during this week’s practices and other bowl-related festivities.

Matt Elam and Marcelys Jones, roommates in Texas, are two players Barker is recruiting heavily, but there are at least a couple other guys feeling the pressure from Barker who haven’t really been on our radar until now. One of those players is Travonte Valentine.

Valentine is the No. 7 defensive tackle and the 56th ranked player overall in 247Sports.com’s Top247. He committed to Miami last May, but he’s at least listening to what Barker is pitching and a Wednesday night phone call with the UK coaching staff alongside Barker has him considering switching his scheduled official visit to Alabama to an official visit to Kentucky.

Valentine is good friends with Matt Elam and he told 247Sports.com, “He’s like my little brother. He’s been talking about Kentucky. I think they said me and Matt Elam can be the tandem going into Kentucky so we’ll see.”

Erick Smith is another player Barker is pursuing in San Antonio this week. He’s a four-star safety, considered to be an Ohio State lean. Smith is very close to Marcelys Jones — they’re high school teammates — and they’re both entertaining the idea of playing at Kentucky.

This could be a HUGE weekend for UK football recruiting and Matt Elam could get the ball rolling with a commitment, potentially setting up a package deal with the others.

Go Cats.

  4. Don't expect too much
    3:06 pm January 2, 2014 Permalink

This is a great sign for UK football, but don’t expect too much from this weekend. It’s almost a lock that Elam will come to Kentucky, but the other players are completely up in the air. The talk of flipping sounds like the “cool” thing to do for these players right now, but most of them will stick to where they’re committed. I’m hopeful that we can get another big name besides Elam, but don’t expect all of them to commit.

I don’t get the sense that anyone expects all of them to flip to us. If we can even get one to flip that would be great.

I don’t think Matt Elam is anyone’s “little” brother… And if Valentine really is that much bigger than Elam, UK is going to have to renegotiate their deal with Nike to include more cash to feed those guys!

  6. Whoa-hoa Nelly! It would be beyond incredible if we even got three of those four! All four would seem like a miracle.

“…and a Wednesday night phone call with the UK coaching staff has him considering switching his scheduled official visit to Alabama to an official visit to Kentucky.

We are in an NCAA Dead Period. It extends from Dec. 16 through Jan. 15.

If, in fact, this phone call occurred, it is an NCAA VIOLATION, and not a small one. If it did not occur, then Drew Franklin is a P.O.S. LIAR. Which is it?

Dead Period:The college coach cannot make in-person contact with you or your legal guardians. This prevents the coach from making any evaluations of you whatsoever. However, the coach can make telephone calls to you or your legal guardians.

A Dead Period is one of the most confused periods. In a nutshell, coaches are not allowed to meet with you on or off campus during this time. So here is what is ALLOWED during a Dead Period…

      -Letters/Emails
      -Calls
-Visits to a college, but you may not meet with a coach

Phone calls are allowed during the dead period.

Good lord, NCAA. It’s not a violation. The Dead period only restricts “IN-PERSON” recruiting. Get your facts straight before you troll.

    “Dead Period
The dead period is the designated time in which no in-person contact, regardless of location, is allowed.

Phone calls and mail are still permitted, however, and coaches will be blowing up phones like crazy. The dead period begins Monday, Feb. 4, and runs through National Signing Day.”

WELL OF COURSE THESE SMALL RANDOM RUMORS MEAN WE’RE OBVIOUSLY GOING TO GET ALL OF THESE GUYS. AND IF YOU DON’T AGREE AND DON’T THINK SO THEN YOU ARE OBVIOUSLIY A TROLL AND A LOUISVILLE FAN.

Honestly come on, Those guys have all been committed to other schools for a while. What about just hanging out with a couple recruits for a week says that they are all of a sudden thinking about UK? They are hanging out with a bunch of recruits from other schools as well that are trying to flip them. This isn’t news. What reason do they have to come? “Early Playing Time” isn’t it, these guys are the best of the best in high school and will play anywhere. This is just another bunch of nothing made into something by the writers at KSR

I don’t post much on here–normally just read. However, with the quick judgment on Drew Franklin, I had to say something. My goodness, what has happened to the civility in our society? Drew, I know you have to have thick skin to be in any kind of “news” related job, but please NCAA, ease up a bit. The rush to call someone names that we would never call them face-to-face has become the norm on websites, but it doesn’t have to be on here. I am living in an area there are just a handful of UK fans. It is great to have a free website that I can come to and get great news. Please try to consider that there is an individual sitting on the other side of your keyboard before you digitally curse them.

Valentine may have grade troubles that prevent him from getting into Miami. Supposedly if he doesn’t make the cut, LSU will be his choice.

UKSUPERFAN, are you a troll. What makes you think any high school player, with the exception of a very small percentage can walk into football programs such as Alabama, FSU, Ohio St., Auburn, LSU and Oregon to name just a few and start next year. FB is not BB, they go to these other schools and they red-shirt for a year, then maybe play 2-3 and sometimes 4 years spending 5 years in college to get to the NFL. They come to UK, play next year, turn the program around in 2-3 years and get into the NFL 1-2 years earlier. For example look at Rick Robey’s son, lived and played HS FB in Louisville, was all state and world and UK wanted him badly. He goes to Florida, still don’t know if he’s ever played there in the last 3 years. I’m sure after the ball got rolling with STOOPS TROOPS, and these top players see the talent coming knowing that they can indeed get playing time right away it does make a huge difference and I for one will not be surprise to see some flip and come here.
