Damien Harris returning to Alabama

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

Six playoff games and two national championships in three seasons isn’t enough for Damien Harris in Tuscaloosa.

The Richmond, Ky. native announced on Wednesday that he will return to Alabama for his senior season to chase a third title in four years with the Crimson Tide.

Harris led Alabama with 1,000 yards rushing yards and 11 touchdowns this past season, after rushing for 1,040 and two scores as a sophomore in 2016. He was benched in the national title game for true freshman running back Najee Harris, but the emergence of the other Harris did not push Damien toward early entry in the NFL. considers Harris the sixth-best back in its current NFL draft projections for this year; ranks him as the fifth-best back and the No. 35 overall prospect.

You can expect he’ll be in the preseason Heisman talk next fall.

after seeing the 4th stringer Harris play, I’d say Damien will be watching a lot of football from the sidelines, and will lose draft positions based on this decision.

Man that kids the real deal, must be nice to have that as a 4th option

From a financial stand point, seems like a really bad move.

As a UK fan who hates UofL, I can’t wait until the first game next year and I watch Alabama destroy UofL. The fact that D Harris will be there will make it only sweeter.

Harris has rushed for 1000 yards in back to back seasons for Alabama but what puts him in the Heisman conversation? He’s been an average RB for Alabama. Not Heisman worthy at all.

Average at Bama gets you Heisman consideration. When your o line is that good, you’ll put up gaudy stats that may mask some deficiencies.

Not saying Harris isn’t a *very* good back because I have working eyeballs and know that he is excellent, but the Heisman is as much a popularity contest as an award for the “best” player and name recognition plays a HUGE role in the voting.

If any of you think Damien is going to run away from competition at AL you’re crazy. The kid went in and took the job from Scarborough who was on a huge roll at AL. I doubt he’s worried about the ‘new’ kid on the block. It’s one of the reasons he chose AL to start with. He’s driven by the competition, a real warrior. Remember, he gained those 1000 yds each year sharing time.

Was he actually benched or were they rotating snaps or did Bama just ride the hot back?

I think Saban was just trying different players in the skill positions looking for a spark – and he got a boom.

I wish him the best, although would have loved to see him in blue and white. Still, makes me feel like a jealous spouse to see so many basketball recruits that UK was after staying with their hometown schools, while we can’t keep in-state football stud recruits. Seeing him spurn the NFL for a senior season rubs salt in the wounds – would have been nice to see John Wall, Anthony Davis, or KAT come back for an extra season. Oh well, that’s life.

Love Damien but preseason Heisman talk in a crowded backfield seems like a very long shot.

Don’t care what this kid does; he used the UK coaches to gain on-field access during games, hang around practices, be a big shot knowing full well he had NO intention of coming to UK. I hope he rides the pine next year at bama.

I don’t really look at it that way. Maybe he was thinking with his head to go to Bama, but was hoping for a compelling reason that he should go to UK. We are talking about a high school kid here, after all. Besides, even though he didn’t come to UK, at least him having us in the picture with the likes of Bama could have helped our national exposure. At least it puts us on the radar.

Nope; his response to the questions about going to bama convinces me he never had any intentions of going to UK. Statements like “it would take a lot more than me to make UK good”. Pfffft, i prefer benny anyway. He better hope he never sprains a toe and misses a few snaps or he’ll never see the field again.

I would not trade Benny Snell for Damien Harris! I think we got the better player, just not from Kentucky. This is the same reason that Benny should stay all 4 years at KY. Running backs are disposable in the NFL, so they should cherish their college days. Learn the hard way like Boom, or smash the record books at KY. It should be an easy choice! Staying does not ensure success, nor does leaving early. It is hard for the NFL to turn down a four year 1000 yard rusher. I hope Benny stays all four years.

Yeah, this Harris kid is very good, almost Benny Snell good.

Benny would’ve had 2000 yards per season behind an Alabama line!!

This is not an exaggeration. Benny Snell is one hell of a back. If he was at Bama He would have taken even more of Scarbrough’s carries away than Damien did. The dude is flat out unstoppable when he gets decent blocks.
