Undefeated foes will face off Saturday morning at 11 am when 12-0 Elizabethtown kicks off against 10-0 Ashland’s Paul G. Blazer High School at Kroger Field. Here’s what you need to know before one team walks away with the 3A State Championship trophy.
How They Got Here
The Ashland Tomcats’ dominant defense has suffocated opponents this postseason, allowing only 10 total points over the last four games. They’ve pitched four shutouts this season and only one team has reached double figures. Raceland scored 15 points, yet still lost by 35. Their toughest test to date was against Belfry, squeaking out a 10-3 win in the semifinals.
While the Tomcats won with defense, E-Town made it to the finals behind a high-scoring offense that averaged over 45 points per game. Their highly-anticipated rematch of Kroger’s KSR Game of the Week against Bardstown was the only game decided by less than 19 points.

— Ashland Blazer was undefeated in boys’ basketball last season too. They were set to play E-Town in the first round of the Sweet 16 before COVID-19 canceled the tournament.
— Lengthy list of famous Blazer alumni. Wildcat great and JP Sports icon Larry Conley is the first name that comes to mind when I think of Ashland Blazer. The Judd sisters are kind of a big deal too. Brandon Webb won the NL Cy Young award in 2006. The original host of Wheel of Fortune, Chuck Woolery, is also an alumnus.
— The movie Elizabethtown was shot in Elizabethtown. It was a big deal when Orlando Bloom and Kirsten Dunst were in the Bluegrass, but I admittedly never saw the rom-com.
— E-Town has one state title. That was won back in 1969. Ashland Blazer won it two years prior, in 1967, and won another state championship 30 years ago in 1990.
