Chris Beard got PAID

Texas Tech now has one of the highest-paid coaches in basketball.

The Red Raiders and head coach Chris Beard agreed to a new six-year deal on Monday that will keep him (but not really) in Lubbock through the 2024-25 season. The extension bumps him to an average of $4.575 million annually with a $3 million buyout after the first year.

Beard is now paid more than every coach in college basketball not named John Calipari or Mike Krisiskewskyzi, according to the USA Today database. Tom Izzo, Tony Bennett, Bill Self, Chris Mack, Roy Williams, Jay Wright and everyone else on the list only wish they could get paid Chris Beard money.

Worth it? And is there any chance he stays at Texas Tech throughout the entire contract? If a Big 12 school wants him, that $3 million buyout gets doubled.

Looking through his wiki page shows that he’s worked at Texas tech for > 10 years combined at this point. Every other job he’s had was 1-3 years. So what’s the allusion to him not staying there?

You forgot Barnes at TN, Drew. Beard is now the 4th highest paid college BBALL coach. Cal, K, Barnes(still surprises me) , then Beard.

And Texas does not have a state income tax unlike North Carolina and Kentucky. That puts a little more money in his pocket

I’m happy for the program and its fans. They may not have found the right guy until now but the folks at Tech have been legitimately trying to win in hoops for some time.
