Cheerleaders not essential at games, says KHSAA Commissioner

In an effort to combat the spread of the coronavirus, schools are trying to limit the number of people at high school football games this fall. According to KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett, one group that isn’t essential on the sidelines is cheerleaders.

“The other issue, quite frankly, we have, we have a discussion later on about sideline cheer and they are fantastic at events,” Tackett said in this morning’s Board of Control meeting. “They do add some enthusiasm and as most of you know that I married into cheerleading years ago and as a spouse of a former president of their association, if you don’t think I don’t hear feedback…at the same time, what I’m going to say is not going to be popular with that group but cheerleaders are not essential at a football game. They’re nice but not essential. They’ll be essential when they have their season. That’s their essential time. And sometimes people don’t want to hear that.”

Oh boy. That’ll get people talking.

The fact is cheerleading proponents wanted their own competition season for years. They got it. Then they wanted to be recognized and placed under the jurisdiction of the KHSAA. They got it. Tackett stated they will still have their own competition season. So what’s the problem here?

Essential – players, coaches and referees. Not essential – cheerleaders, parents and fans.

Agree than parents, fans and cheerleaders are not vital. However, let schoolS manage their home games And allow cheerleaders If outdoor guidelines can be met

Let schools manage their home games???
That’s what he did… and some of them proved that they were not able to handle it. He is basically saying you better get it together or he will step in.

Also, 60 limit is stupid. Plenty of room on sidelines to accommodate more and meet social distancing guidelines.

They’re not needed just like the band is not needed.
