Charlie Strong Reportedly Takes Texas Job

image from nooga.com

It looks like Louisville is heading to the ACC with a new football coach.  After rumors circulated throughout the week, the first unofficial report comes from 247Sports’ Bobby Burton, saying that Charlie Strong will replace Mack Brown at Texas.

It is still very NEW news and nothing is official, but it’s OK to smile while your Loserville friends go insane.

Update: 11:41 PM

ESPN’s Brett McMurphy is reporting that Strong has NOT accepted the job; wishing to speak first with U of L President James Ramsey and Tom Turtleneck Jurich.

Update: 11:55 PM

Pete Thamel is now saying Strong and Texas have agreed to a 5-year, $5 million deal.  Others are saying that he hasn’t been offered, but will accept the job if they give it to him. Louisville’s play-by-play announcer Paul Rogers said Charlie will stay. Pretty much, things are kind of crazy right now so I’m just going to call it a night and let you decipher the Twitter madness.

Little brother UK fans are the most delusional bunch. Minus a few bad years with their last Coach Louisville’s team has been very strong. In the last decade I remember two one loss seasons and two BCS Bowl Game victories. UK fans need to realize that basketball in a hobby compared to football, and UK’s basketball success does not make them the premier program in the state. Louisville is the big brother! Little brother UK just has jealously issues.

Ammass is true that football is bigger than basketball and as much as I hate to admit it, louisville has a better football program. UK football sucks which means UK athletic program is mediocre nationwide as bball doesn’t lift it up much since football is far more important

WHAS 11 just reported the same story from the Texas website. I have to say if this is true, I’m a little surprised. I think Strong is a quality coach, but I expected Texas to go after someone with a longer run at a more established football power. I hope for Charlie’s sake that this job doesn’t turn into something that chews him up and spits him out. Could end up being analogous to Tubby taking the UK job. Some folks are cut out for high profile jobs in the spotlight, and some just aren’t.

Strong is an alright guy to me and I thought when UL hired him they got a quality coach. That being said the Texas job is a huge step up and he will need to take his staff with him and build that program to his expectations. Not a public relations guy and may be a little shady with his ethics as far as player personnel. UL returns a lot of people but a new staff means hard times ahead for them while UK is going the other way. GO BBN, GO STOOPS TROOPS

Dang! Texas sure hit an infield single with this hire. Way to go!

I figure Louisville would have been a fringe top 40 team next season with Strong. Despite the fact that Strong is hailed as “one of the best defensive minds in college football” their defense was never anything special this year and their offense was underwhelming considering their quarterback is going to be the #1 pick in the NFL draft.

Point being, I’m not sure Louisville will be significantly worse off because of this. And they aren’t even recruiting all that well so we can’t even really benefit from picking up a decommit or two. I’d much rather see James Franklin leave Vandy.

      Denny Crum is a legend.
Disgracefully, and shamefully, Uavel treated him piss-poorly in order to bring in former KENTUCKY legend Rick Pitino.
Uavel became the profound WHORE, as an educational institution, having already taken Howard Schellenberger in the 80s (lil bro hires former UK football legend).
So there is as trend that uavel follows and that is the need to beat and exceed big brother KENTUCKY – at all costs.
Which again brings me to the point: uavel prostitutes itself in the name of lil napoleon syndrome – gotta keep up with and become better than UofK.

Next year UK will be better and UofL will be worse and either will be lucky to make a bowl game. Neither will ever win a national championship in football. I will still support UK and hopefully UofL doesn’t fall off too much. It’s a lot more fun when both teams are decent.

Charlie Strong is wanting to meet with the admin.

As has been earlier noted: Jurich shows up with the checkbook and Strong stays at uavel.

Strong knows the Texas job is deep and turbulent shark-filled water; and, he knows he’s know Michael Phelps in that environment.

Better and safer to get more money in Louisville as a result of the free publicity.

And, better to await the perfect opening in Gainesville.

Even I give the Louisville AD credit for having enough sense not to rehire Petrino ,and I don’t think he is a mental giant. Then again, he kept Pitino on after his 15 seconds of fame and all that positive publicity it brought to Louisville. Maybe he just wants two sleaze bag coaches on his staff. All you women in the Louisville Athletics dept,,,,beware.

Jurich won a title by keeping Pitino. Worked out well for them.

Correction, he prostituted himself to win the title and made Louisville look very bad in the process. Pitino should have been fired for his indiscretions. Any other school would have done so.

Beavis, while I do not disagree with much, actually the Hoyas kept John Thompson around despite his philandering ways…..and Georgetown is a Catholic University.

Whatever John Thompson did cannot compare with the public humiliation Pitino put UL through. I don’t remember John Thompson ever sitting in a public courtroom confessing to banging trailer-park trash on restaurant tables and paying for abortions. That will always overshadow Pitino’s coaching career.

I hope Strong stays. If the hire Petrino, we are in trouble. Perrino’s uofl teams prison raped us every year. He would have hung 60 on us with Bridgewater.

Charlies Strong to Texas does not make sense. The Texas fans will NOT be happy with this hire. Texas wants a big time coach from a big time program like Saban, Jimbo Fisher, Jim Mora. Plus Strong is replacing a legend who knew how to connect to the Texas fans and media. When Charlie interviews he sounds like a dumb jock football coach.

As for Strong’s decision, u should always take the more prestigious job while you can. There is no certainty Strong would ever be considered for another high profile job.
You think Stoops will stay at UK if we make solid bowl appearances and win some big games. The answer is a resounding NO because UK won’t open the check book to the extent a football power house can.

Tom, r u saying that Colonel Sanders, was a racist?. Over the years I have met many ul supporters
who appeared to be “racist”. Local loserville sports editors during the early 70s tried to portray the ul
basketball program as being “morally superior” to Kentucky, based upon integrating their basketball program a couple years before UK, inspite of the SEC ban and Rupp wanting the same players at
Kentucky that went to ul. Remember Unseld and Beard?, Rupp recruited both and Beard told Rupp he was coming a day nefore signing with ul, Unseld has repeated many times he did not want to be first and did not feel comfortable. UK’s record since those days has surpassed ul, we have totally turned the tables on them. Payne, Bennett, Smith, great players from Louisville who loved playing at UK,
Tubby Smith led the program for a decade, Bernadette Locke-Maddox, coached the UK women as well.
UL on the otherhand has NEVER hired an African-American coach in basketball. I rest my case.

You must be ignorant to historical facts. The UK and UofL rivalry was partly based on race lines. I think UK has made major strides over the years but to even suggest that UK’s race history is better because of two basketball hires is ridiculous. You are clearly below the age of 40 because anybody over the age of 40 knows the history. If you are above the age of 40 you must live in the part of the state that still has many houses flying confederate flags.

There is a considerable amount of moronic comments on this thread. Whatever decision coach Strong makes he has made UofL a much better program and has the program in great shape. UofL is a basketball school that is where the passion lies. Even though they have made great strides in football it is still a basketball school.

I wish coach Strong the best, no matter what his decision, and thank him for helping UofL beat UK three years in a row.

If UK is lucky, maybe coach Stoops will be faced with a similar decision someday; however, the jury is still out on whether or not he is the “guy” or not.

I bet Charlie Strong is waiting to see if Al Golden takes the Penn State job. Miami would be a much better fit for Strong. If that happens then James Franklin will take the Texas job.

At this point I am not sure Miami is a better job than UofL. Personally I think James Franklin is a better higher for Texas but both are very good coaches.

Agree at this point Miami isn’t a better job but Charlie has lots of ties to Miami and South Florida high schools for recruiting. I told my Texas friend this morning that Franklin would be a better hire for Texas.

Charlie Strong, according to a news report, coached 52 games at Louisville (37-15).

By my unofficial calculation only about 10% of the Cardinals’ opponents during Strong’s tenure were ranked nationally (that computes to an average of one or two ranked teams per season). The remaining 90% of the teams Louisville played not only were unranked, but were ranked well below the Top 50. In other words, Strong has never been challenged.

In Texas (where I assume they did the simple math I attempted), he will be asked to step up. Wish him well.
