I don’t know what I’m more disgusted with today: Kansas getting such an undeserved W, or Ashley Judd scolding Chick Fil A for encouraging fans to cheer against the other team’s free throws.

More importantly though, CATS LOOKED GREAT LAST NIGHT. Very real progress.

I thought the Chick Fil A thing was great – actually got the crowd into it.

    • I didn’t see Judd’s tweets so I don’t know exactly what she said, but to be fair to her, she may have looked at it like kicking an opponent while they were down, as opposed to cheering a miss in a close game. They could have just as easily given out chicken when UK makes 2 in a row.

definitely the kansas thing. they have the most obvious home cooking home courts in the nation, but then they are celebrated for winning the big12 every year. of course they are going to win, they never lose at home because crap like this always happens whenever anybody gets close. hell remember when they got like a million free throws in the last 10 minutes against us last season?

Also, on the ashley thing. i don’t want to cheer when the other team does bad – i want to cheer when my team does good. hat tip to chick fil a for coming up with a different promotion, and i don’t have anything against, it, but i see where she’s coming from.

No one gets home cooking from the refs like Kansas (except Duke). There’s a reason Kansas almost never loses at home.

Don’t mind cheering during the FT’s; but, waving psychedelic spinning signs is juvenile.

    • Despite what I said, I think that promo is kind of funny.

I’m betting that the people sending terrible tweets and messages to Ashley Judd are the same fans who like to label anyone with a different opinion as a “liberal”. Remember when the catchphrase was “commie”? Times change…

    • Booby Petrino

The Chick Fil A promotion was to get fans cheering and involved, and it did just that. We already cheer when we make free throws, so promoting that would be pointless. The promotion wasn’t “Cheer when the opponent misses” in my understanding, it was ‘if the opponent misses two you get a free biscuit’…so what it did was get people to get loud while they’re taking the shots (like you’re already supposed to do), and then of course when they missed them they cheered again because they won something. The sensitive society we live in is getting a little too soft with this one.

I thought Ashley was being obnoxious, but harassing her for it is equally obnoxious. I agree with some of you that the “cheer for missed free throws and win a chicken biscuit” promotion is funny and anything that gets the crowd loud is cool with me.

    • J-Dub421
      10:48 am January 4, 2017 Permalink

Cheering an opponent’s misses does feel a bit classless, but I get that Chick-fil-A was just trying to get people involved (and promote their business).

    • ukjaybrat
      10:49 am January 4, 2017 Permalink

her first tweet was anything but obnoxious. i thought she just expressed her displeasure and politely asked it be changed. everythign after that… well, when she had 100s of internet tough guys blasting her for what amounted to be her opinion, can you really blame her from then on?

Along the lines of what Matt is saying, people’s worldviews frequently change when they leave their hometown and get out and see the world firsthand. Sometimes that change can be for the good, and sometimes it can be for the bad, and whether it is good or bad is often based on the viewpoint of the person judging them!

    • Realme
      10:58 am January 4, 2017 Permalink

Jay, she could save herself a lot of aggravation by ignoring Twitter trolls. What they think really shouldn’t matter to her. Any level of famous woman gets insanely abusive comments online just for being there, and nothing good comes from acknowledging those idiots.

    • ukjaybrat
      11:06 am January 4, 2017 Permalink

While that is true, that doesn’t give anybody the right to be obnoxious to her for her opinion. we can’t say the dbags are fine because there will always be dbags, and then condemn her for reacting to them.

    • Booby Petrino
      11:07 am January 4, 2017 Permalink

I don’t think anyone would’ve been complaining if the game was close and the free throws mattered. I would think most of you would want us to get loud while they’re shooting and cheer when they miss. But since we were killing them, people are scolding the promotion. In all seriousness, those of you who agree with Ashley: should we not get loud while opponents are shooting free throws and cheer when they miss if the game is close? I’d love to hear your answer. Then I will know if your problem is with cheering when an opponent misses, or cheering when they miss because the game is over.

    • J-Dub421
      11:16 am January 4, 2017 Permalink

In general, I’m more of a cheer for your team/guy, as opposed to cheer against the other team/guy. There are a few exceptions (Duke, U of L, UNC, Indiana).

    • ukjaybrat
      11:22 am January 4, 2017 Permalink

again, i don’t have anything wrong with the promotion because in spirit it’s intended to be get your fans to cheer during free throws. that’s a good thing.

But look at what you’re asking. for fans to cheer in close games. let’s assume our fans aren’t already cheering in close games, because our fans ALWAYS get up for big or close games.
Those big games have players that just don’t miss free throws very often. this promotion will really only ever come to fruition in the games where players miss free throws often. the ones on bad teams. where we beat them by 40. when it just seems mean that we are piling on to a kid who’s not only getting his butt kicked but also just missed two more free throws. just seems unnecessary.

but again, i really don’t have anything against the promotion itself. i was just pointing out that i see where ashley was coming from with her first tweet and the trolls that bashed her were completely out of line.

Random Observations from last night’s game:

Fox played very well, but is still a little sloppy with the ball sometimes. I just keep reminding myself that he’s a freshman and is going to make some freshman mistakes.

Monk played well, his defense is improving, and I thought his shot selection was better (He actually passed instead of trying to force a shot over multiple defenders a few times!)

Willis played with more confidence and energy, which was good.

Hawkins played well. (I love Hawkins!)

Bam is really starting to improve now which is very exciting. He’s starting to make that later in the season big-man leap we’ve seen in prior seasons.

Isaac had a pretty good game. If Isaac can give us that type of production on both ends of the floor consistently, we’ll be very tough to beat come March.

Wenyen Gabriel gets visibly better every game. He’s still raw and has a ways to go, but it’s fun to watch him improve and his ceiling is very high.

My bad, that was supposed to be an individual comment, not part of this thread.

    • It is hard to do both, but we had such a big lead.

To make a long story short: what happened was that someone asked “Who is this Sam Gormley?” They haven’t seen his posts I suppose. Some folks started using all the quips from Chuck Norris facts, like “Superman wears Sam Gormley pajamas” and such. It was very similar to the one a couple years ago when everyone was having fun with the fact that a UT player looked like a Civil War soldier.

Tennessee went 9-4, beat some good teams along the way, finished 2nd in the SEC East. I don’t think it’s that bad of a scenario. They put up A LOT of points this year as well. Other than chemistry issues, I’m not sure we can fully blame that on the OC. Seems he did a good job there.

You probably deserve some kind of medal for spending that much time in the car with your kids – I know I would. 🙂

I have always like the idea of installing a power limo-screen in a minivan that you could deploy to shut out all the noise from the kids in the back seat. Another great idea from RCF! I could retire and tell my boss to stuff it if I could just find a way to market all these ideas.

At the end of the day, most all college athletes are used to the distractions of the crowd and can block it out. I coach girls’ juniors volleyball, and we used to have some of our beginners get distracted by crowd noise, or the kids on the other team would yell “balls up” when they tossed the ball to serve. We trained them to block all this out, and after a couple of years of it most of them ignore it.

    • Booby Petrino
      1:43 pm January 4, 2017 Permalink

But the promotion wasnt telling them to cheer after the fact that the player missed and yell you suck. The promotion was to get people cheering during the shots in the hopes they would miss it. The cheering after the fact was in part to them not scoring and in part bc the crowd got the reward. So blame the crowd for being “tacky” and cheering bc they got a free biscuit, but it’s not fault of the business who gave the biscuit.
