Last week, we found out that John Calipari is still looking to add some guards to the 2017 class and one of the players he’s looking at is four-star shooting guard Jemarl Baker. Baker was released from his letter of intent with the Cal Golden Bears last week following Cuonzo Martin’s departure, which is when Kentucky first showed interest. Now, according to Baker’s AAU coach Ryan Silver, Calipari will travel to Los Angeles later this week to meet with the 6’2″ 165 lbs. guard.
Baker is considered the 65th best player in the country and the 19th-best shooting guard according to ESPN. 247 Sports lists him at 119th overall and the 22nd-best shooting guard. He’s got interest from Maryland, Utah, Oregon, Arizona, Duke, Marquette, Virginia, and Arizona State.
The recruiting dead period ends on Thursday at noon, so that’s probably when Calipari will head west. He’s also expected to visit another potential guard, Illinois Mr. Basketball Mark Smith, on Thursday. Former NC State signee Thomas Allen could also be in the mix.
