Calipari to Bragg: “Kentucky is not for everyone”

@carltonbragg31

John Vincent Calipari was in Cleveland last night, visiting five-star power forward Carlton Bragg and his family in Bragg’s home. Bragg posted the photo with Cal on the Twitter machine around 11:00 pm last night.

This morning, Sir Adam Zagoria reached out to Bragg’s mentor for some scoop on how things went during the visit. Michael Graves, the mentor, told Zagoria:

Cal stated that Kentucky is not for everyone. It’s gonna be tough. Carlton will get a great education, be in the best shape of his life and be developed. He also talked about the upcoming [NBA] combine he’s having. He’s doing it for the players. He puts his players first, and getting them ready for the next level [NBA]. He also talked about what it means to play for Kentucky.”

Bragg will travel to Lexington for his official visit during Big Blue Madness weekend next month.

The headline also works, “Calipari to Brag: Kentucky Is Not for Everyone”

Boy, sure sounds like Cal is cheating to me. What coach goes into a recruiting pitch and tells the recruits that this place isn’t for everyone and still locks the #1 class year in and year out?? Coach Cal is the man!!

Reverse psychology works really well on teenagers, doubly true for teenage elite athletes. That line about it not being for everyone is basically daring him to come prove he can cut it while others can’t.

UK’s graduation success rate last year was one of the highest in the NCAA tournament. Just because you aren’t playing basketball for UK anymore doesn’t mean you have to stop taking classes and get your degree. Ask Jodie Meeks about that sometime, he left right before Cal got here and just got his degree this past spring.

I got my college degree and only make $60,000 a year. I’d rather play basketball making millions without a college degree.

Done deal. s uK’s to lose. ook at Bragg’s mom’s face! BTW, haters: have you ever considered that Cal does as well as he does because he really IS sincere about putting players first?

He doesnt promise a degree because a degree is not up to him. He puts guys in a position to succeed. You wanna go pro, he can get you in the position to do that. You wanna get a degree (like alex) you will have that option. There is a reason former players come back during the summers to do continue their degrees. What makes UK different than most schools is UK only has to foot the bill for one year haha

He’ll get a great education? I hope Cal realizes that UK is ranked #129 on the US News & World Report Rankings of Best Colleges. An education, yes, but not what I would call a great education.

Yes, #121 in the entire country (including major private schools and the Ivy League). For a public university, that’s excellent. Especially considering the Commonwealth’s overall wealth level is near the bottom of the country.

Most of UK’s individual programs are ranked in the top 100, but there are other factors that go into the overall rankings like class sizes, tuition costs, acceptance rate (exclusivity is at a premium for public universities, they’re required to accept a certain number of in-state students per year), tenured vs non-tenured professors, research grants, etc. Dive into the details, UK is actually a very good school, unlike our counterpart down I-64.

What everyone should realize about the US News & World Report Ranking is that it is a popularity contest. There are zero objective criteria. It is, in effect, a poll. Further, depending on one’s chosen field of study, the ranking of the University overall may not reflect accurately on that particular Department and Division. Some programs at UK are highly ranked among public institutions and others are not as highly regarded. Any such ranking system such as this needs to be considered for what it actually is and how their data are obtained.

Cliff, you’re thinking of the other major college ranking by The Princeton Review. They’re one that bases their results on student surveys instead of objective data like US News and World Report.

Louisville does so much better in Princeton Review rankings than US News because their students aren’t smart enough to realize it’s an academically lousy school.

Yep, as soon as your stats started dropping your ass was on the bench. I can put up with the drug use and the fighting and the guns and not paying child support, but dammit you better put some numbers up.

Where exactly did he say he uses drugs on Twitter? I believe you are talking about the ‘twist’ tweet, and twist doesn’t always refer to weed. It’s also a term used for girls. You assume he’s talking about weed bc that’s what Louisville players love. UK players seem to love p***y more than weed.

    • LolCards
      1:27 pm September 18, 2014 Permalink

oh and the tweet about getting whatever you want if you play at UK could also refer to getting whatever you want from girls. So assume it’s drugs bc that’s what you want to do. I’ll assume it’s hos bc that’s what I want. Neither of us know exactly what he meant so don’t come trying to act like you have facts.

Great education? At UK? He is going to play one year and then it is to the NBA. As for academics, UK is not rated in the top 100.
