The halftime exchange between Calipari and Payne was great

The new edition of Kentucky basketball’s behind-the-scenes video series, The Journey, is now online for your viewing pleasure and it is awesome. It’s always awesome.

But this week’s look back at the win at Vanderbilt revealed a back-and-forth halftime conversation between John Calipari and Kenny Payne as Calipari tried to decide whether or not Keldon Johnson should start the second half after 16 minutes with no points and no rebounds in the first.

Payne believed, yes, Johnson should start the second half, but Calipari wondered why. “You want to be his boy? Why do you say that?” Cal asked him.

Payne looked directly at Johnson, pointed at him, and said, “Because his ass is going to wake up.”

Johnson scored 11 points in the second half.

My best guess is that when he was the main guy he would get more chances to get going quicker but with the team playing better we have too many options for scoring so it takes him longer to find his groove.

Good video . Everybody will eventually get going . We have such a starting 5 that they’ll just have to take turns eating . Depending on match ups different positions will score on diff nites. Everybody just needs to keep their head up . #1 #WeareUk

I think Keldon brings the intangibles. So he should start every game despite his scoring accumulations

There is such a double standard. I thought the rule was produce or sit. Would Nick get the same treatment after going scoreless and no rebounds in a half? No.
