Over at the Herald-Leader, Bill Estep has a story of all the “heavy hitters” who have penned letters of support for Jerry Lundergan, the former head of the Kentucky Democratic party who was convicted on campaign finance charges.
Several prominent figures have written U.S. District Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove, asking for leniency for Lundergan. The group of letter-senders has as many as 85 Lundergan family members and friends, including head coach of the University of Kentucky’s men’s basketball program, John Calipari.
The part about Calipari:
Calipari said he has attended mass every morning with Lundergan at the Cathedral of Christ the King in Lexington for years, and that Lundergan has served on the board of Calipari’s charitable foundation.
Lundergan has supported Calipari’s holiday dinners for needy families and he and his family volunteer every year to serve the Thanksgiving meal at the Salvation Army, the UK coach said.
“I have never met a more generous or caring man, he cares more about those around him than he does about himself,” Calipari wrote the judge.
