Cal offers another 2014 point guard, Dominic MaGee

With Emmanuel Mudiay out of the picture, Cal is doing his best to make sure the point guard position for 2014 is covered. According to 247’s Chris Fisher, Kentucky offered 4-star point guard Dominic MaGee a spot on Monday:

“They offered. I think it was [Monday]. The assistant coach [Kenny Payne] called my mom and dad and said they wanted me. [Calipari] is supposed to call today.”

MaGee’s final five schools are Kentucky, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Memphis, and LSU. At 6’3″, 175 lbs, the Louisiana native is bigger than UK’s other PG prospect Tyler Ulis, and has drawn comparisons to John Wall, another great Calipari guard. Understandably, UK’s system appeals to him:

“They produce a lot of guards, one and dones. Anthony Davis, Marquis Teague, a lot of good players came from Kentucky,” MaGee said. “Coach Calipari is a great coach.”

ESPN considers MaGee the 71st best player in the 2014 class. He says he’ll visit each of the schools in his top five, starting with Memphis on September 7th.

Where is a good resource for looking back at pre-college national rankings of Tubby- and Pitino-era recruits? I didn’t start following recruiting closely until Cal, and I would love to look back at some of the teams and see how they looked on paper, who was a bust, who over-performed, etc.

Let’s not mention the Wall comparisons with the #71 recruit in the class? Seems unfair to the kid, and just looks a little ridiculous. A poor man’s John Wall maybe? That at least gives perspective.

In Cal I trust. Maybe a diamond in the rough, that will be here for 4 years. If he lived in New York or played for a traveling team he would be ranked higher.

2 His style of play is like Wall…nobody was saying as good as Wall…Mudiay is pretty far behind Wall at the same point also, but we are talking about style of play and strengths, not level of talent or skill.

For some reason no one wants to play for Kentucky in 2014. I don’t think we woulda got towns if he didn’t commit so early. Hopefully it gets turned around here soon

I don’t know what level he’s playing against, but he looks fairly skilled from this video. Plus it looks like he is a lefty and that’s always fun.

Looks like Cal learned his lesson from last year to never get caught without a reliable point guard. I think Cal was counting on Teague being back last year. And in my opinion if Teague had of came back we would have had a MUCH better record. I am not ragging on Ryan Harrow, he just seemed unable for whatever reason to handle the pressure last season.

Remember reading this from earlier in the month about Magee tweeting text messages from coaches such as Travis Ford. I don’t even know what to think about that, but if I were a coach, I know I wouldn’t want my texts made public – especially if I were somebody like Tom Crean – who I’m sure sends out the creepiest texts, ever. Look at how many exclamation marks Ford uses in his texts smh. I guess some kids eat that stuff up, but for me, it would be a turn-off. Ford has a proven system of sending players to the league? Huh? Love ya, Travis, but you’re bullsh*ttin the kid to death,

Are we back to settling for the scraps? What’s wrong with these point guards not wanting to come play for the coach most likely to get them to the NBA? I’m bumfuzzled.

I think it would be much better to get Magee then ullis. I would much rather have a 6 foot 3 or 6 foot 4 guy running our team compared to a 5 foot 8 guy. Size matters. What if we had to play Syracuse in the tournament and ullis would be the point guard going up against syracuses zone, we would have no chance. That’s why we need a big physical point guard.

why are so many of you freaking out? we are talking about a recruiting class that is a year away. we are also talking about a class where only 3 of the top ten plays have committed and UK has one of them and is on the list for most of the 7 remaining. Cal could still end up with Tyus and Jahil. Could be that Cal is try to get a few more roster guards to help over the next 4 years. The 2014 class will have to fill not only the starters but also add depth to the bench.
Let’s not forget that more than one person close to the program has said that Dominique Hawkins has been the real surprise of this class what could be better for us as fans to root for. A NON-ONE-AN-DONE local point guard who bleeds blue? With the way Cal stocks talent a kid like that could lead the team for 2/3 years and that is solid veteran leadership in the most crucial position. I like it.

It’s too early to throw the 2014 season in. Cal gets most of his recruits during the winter and spring not the summer and fall. He is on just about every top 20 players list that has not committed yet and there are quite a few of them.

The PG could be an issue because there are so few of them available but let’s remember that Hawkins is also there and after a year with the twins and Cal, he will be ready.

I doubt Snider will get an offer, his heart is with Louisville and if he went to UK he could really mess things up if he transferred out. Any school would be risking that possibility.

What’s wrong with a 4 star player? The difference between players ranked 11-100 isn’t that great of a difference.

    Oh yeah, #9. Grow up.

Don’t think this has anything to do with not being confident about Ulis, think about it we even if landing both these kids still aren’t overloaded with point guards. Matter of fact if we land both kids and the harrison twins leave that leaves 2, hawkins is a SG same as Floreal. So if we have any concerns it would be we need point guards not a point guard.

All of this will go away as soon as we start playing again. The recruits are turned off by such a bad year last year but as soon as we are on TV every week w/ a top 5 ranking their anxiety will go away
