CJ Conrad has made a beneficial ally, New York Giants Rookie QB Daniel Jones

They say if you walk with trash, you end up smelling the same. The adage about wisely choosing the company you keep also applies to those who can help you succeed. C.J. Conrad is doing just that with the New York Giants.

Through rookie minicamps and OTAs, the former Kentucky tight end has developed a bond with quarterback Daniel Jones, the not-so-fan-favorite the Giants selected in the first round of this year’s NFL Draft. Picked to take over the offense once Eli Manning’s career concludes, Conrad is hitching his wagon to Jones. Roommates at rookie minicamp, they’ve remained close ever since.

“At rookie minicamp we were in our room going through the script every night,” Conrad told the New York Daily News. “When we get the script for the following practice, even now during OTAs and minicamp, I’ll go up to his room and we’ll go through it.

Daniel’s a really smart guy and I want to take full advantage of him because quarterbacks get told everything, so I lean on him for stuff and I’ll make some plays in doing so,” Conrad said with a smile. “So that’s kind of the relationship we’ve got. In general I think me and him feel comfortable out there.”

One of Jones’ favorite targets through the preseason practices, Conrad is doing exactly what he needs to do to stand out in a crowded tight end room. Competing with two others to be the second tight end option behind Rhett Ellison, Conrad’s run-blocking ability may ultimately give him the edge. Pat Shurmur’s offense runs through Saquon Barkley, much like the Benny Snell-driven attack he just left at Kentucky.

Conrad’s experience in the trenches and the early connections he’s made with the Giants will help him potentially secure a spot on the 53-man roster this fall.

Shouldn’t Conrad be bonding with Manning while he has the starting job? What does it matter if you’re tight with the backup quarterback?

If your on the field with the back up QB most of the time who do you think is going to throw you the ball ! Then when you do get on the field with the starting QB you have already proven yourself to be legit and will have no problem being tested for the starting position!! You have to build bridges every where you play! And you need to be smart enough to build a lot of them

After this season if the giants still have a losing record, Eli hasn’t improved on his interception %, and Jones proves himself, the team may call his number. Alot of teams are moving on to younger guys if they no longer believe the old dog has what it takes to win. They’ve gotten rid of most of the locker room trash that was dragging the team down and it may prove to be what Manning needs to get back to his old success but if not it may be to late.
