BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Worst Passing Offense since Mumme?

There is no secret that the passing attack for the Cats this year has been limited.  And I don’t think anybody expected the Air Raid to come back when UK has the talent at running back that we do.  But the last couple games have really exposed the Cats as unable to throw the ball and with a couple tough defenses still left on the schedule, many are worried about if that can improve.

But just how bad has the passing offense been this year?  And will it be considered historically bad?  Below are 3 categories that I looked at since the departure of Hal Mumme in 2001:

Passing Yards Per Game (under 200 ypg listed)
2018: 127.3 yards per game (Stoops)

2011: 135.6 yards per game (Phillips)
2009: 140.3 yards per game (Brooks)
2004: 167.7 yards per game (Brooks)
2005: 168.8 yards per game (Brooks)
2008: 171.8 yards per game (Brooks)
2012: 176.3 yards per game (Phillips)
2016: 186.1 yards per game (Stoops)
2017: 188.2 yards per game (Stoops)
2013: 193.4 yards per game (Stoops)

Total Passing Yards (under 2,000 yards total listed)
2018: 891 yards (projected: 1,654 yards)

2011: 1,627 yards
2009: 1,824 yards
2004: 1,845 yards
2005: 1,857 yards

Times When UK Did Not Have a 1,000 yard passer
2018: Terry Wilson (701), Gunnar Hoak (127)
2009: Mike Hartline (802) and Morgan Newton (706)
2011: Max Smith (819) and Morgan Newton (793)
2012: Max Smith (975), Jalen Whitlow (801), Patrick Towles (233)

Just based on the picture above, that’s terrible arm mechanics.

Yeah, that was the first thing that jumped out to me. His whole body mechanics aren’t that great. Bad footwork, bad hips and torso, and bad arm mechanics.

@RackEmWillie. Shouldn’t the coaches fix all of that?? I mean what are they doing?

It’s kind of hard to work on mechanics during the season when game prep takes up so much time. And he got here late, so not a lot of time during the last off season.

Wilson is nothing more than a running back at QB. Except he cant hold onto the ball. Maybe Cal can recruit him to bball

Cal don’t like turnovers. Send him to golf.

Max smith in my eyes was really good . He hade huge sec games then got stepped over by towels . I never agreed with that . That actually turned me away from uk football for a brief stint

You forgot to mention the part where the team is 6-1 for the first time in 40 years so yeah let’s fix something that ain’t broke

A defense that ranks 2nd in the nation in points per game, a top 5 RB, and top 20 team in rushing yards per game is the reason we’re 6-1. The passing game is 124th in the nation. Yeah, not broke.

We should be longing for the days when we passed for 400 yards in in a 40 point loss. At least we had a QB who could let it rip.

2 Wins over Top 25 teams and a shot at the East Crown but, hey, let’s blow it up so we can air it out a little more. It’s not like our running game is any good.

I just want a QB who can throw strikes at 5-7 yards. Medium routes would open the rushing attack so much Benny would be putting up CRAZY numbers. I’m not asking for the air raid just solid completions
