BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Why Worrying About Our Path is Wasted Energy and Nonsense

south-region

A whole lot of panic right now in the UK fanbase about the draw that is in front of the Cats.  But the fact of the matter is we only know FOR SURE 1 opponent the Cats will have and that is Northern Kentucky.  No other opponent is determined and the tournament is notorious for it’s craziness.  So while many are worried about a path of Wichita State, UCLA, and North Carolina, the fact is we don’t know who UK will play after Northern.  So I took a look at the last 10 tournaments UK played in and how often the seeds held as they were supposed to.  Interesting results:

2016 (4-seed, Seeds held in 3 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 13, 5, 1, 2
Actually/Would Have Played: 13, 5, 1*, 6*

2015 (1-seed, Seeds held in 2 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 16, 8, 4, 2
Actually/Would Have Played: 16, 8, 5, 3

2014 (8-seed, Seeds held in 4 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 9, 1, 4, 2
Actually/Would Have Played: 9, 1, 4, 2

2012 (1-seed, Seeds held in 3 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 16, 8, 4, 2
Actually/Would Have Played: 16, 8, 4, 3

2011 (4-seed, Seeds held in 4 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 13, 5, 1, 2
Actually/Would Have Played: 13, 5, 1, 2

2010 (1-seed, Seeds held in 2 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 16, 8, 4, 2
Actually Would Have Played: 16, 9, 13, 2

2008 (11-seed, Seeds held in 4 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 6, 3, 2, 1
Actually/Would Have Played: 6, 3*, 2*, 1*

2007 (8-seed, Seeds held in 4 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 9, 1, 4, 2
Actually/Would Have Played: 9, 1, 4*, 2*

2006 (8-seed, Seeds held in 2 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 9, 1, 4, 2
Actually/Would Have Played: 9, 1, 5*, 11*

2005 (2-seed, Seeds held in 2 of 4 rounds)
Should Have Played: 15, 7, 3, 1
Actually/Would Have Played: 15, 7, 6, 5

TOTALS
-40 possible opponents
-Seeds held or would have held in 30 of 40 rounds

Now, obviously Wichita State is actually the “underdog” seed although not the actual underdog, so that is one that UK might benefit from the seeds holding and getting Dayton.  But the odds would say that if UK is going to the Final Four, they will have to play the highest possible seed in 3 of 4 rounds so it’s time to buckle up for some great games because despite the “craziness” the tournament is known for, the seeds still generally hold up.

It’s wasted energy because the bracket is set…and it’s NOT going to change. It reminds me of the infamous idiom, “it is…what it is.” Let’s ball!

You both can read further down to mbdavis’ comments and subthread. They all sum it very well. Its a classic BTI post that has no thought process at all.

Good post! Things are looking good for this team, we as fans just need to enjoy the ride and not panic. Dont worry about the results and focus on enjoying the best time of the year as a wildcat fan. This is what we live for in the BBN, so lets stay positive and have some confidence in this young team. They have battled these past few weeks, taken a lot of heat and all the while are on a 11 game winning streak I believe. What more can you ask of these guys? Now they get to play on neutral sites (two of them being in our backyard) and no crazy t-shirt/cowbell nights, and just play winning basketball. Cal brings in young talent and his job has always been to have them ready for this time of the year, numbers show that he is pretty successful at getting them to the late rounds when having a good seed. I like our chances, hell I know Cal likes our chances!

Wait, so the entire point of this post is to tell us that we are wasting our time worrying about the path ahead because we only know 1 team for sure that we will play. And then you dig into the numbers and prove that 75% of the time the seeds have held up so there is actually a very good chance that all of the worrying is actually for a good reason? How do they let you write on this site?

not only that, but 5 of the 10 times the seed didn’t hold, it was a 2/3, 4/5 or 8/9 matchup. not exactly the “March Madness” he is attributing to the fact that the seeds “don’t hold up” 25% of the time.

furthermore. some people are concerned about wichita state. but most people are worried about ucla and unc.
go ahead and count how many times this “march madness” has knocked out a 1 or 3 seed that we should have played… go ahead and check. i dare you.

spoiler, it’s once. one 3/6 matchup way back in 2005 went the other way

so your whole post is saying we shouldn’t be worried about the path, and then providing numbers that prove that in 10 seasons worth of evidence, (had we made it to the final four) the 1 and/or 3 will have only been knocked out once, combined. basically your stats prove that we WILL be playing UNC and UCLA.

I hate to pile on here…….. But I will. This post is equally as terrible as the one from the other day that more or less called Cats fans that argue that Duke always gets an easier draw than Kentucky idiots. The facts are not on your side of the argument here AT ALL! Sure…. UCLA and UNC might both lose before we get to play them (or we might,) but the odds are not in our favor for that to be the case. I agree that worrying about it is not productive, but saying that we ought not be concerned with the potential matchups is asinine. Be better KSR.

Yeah, I thought the whole point of the article was to tell us that the odds are that we will be playing someone like Seton Hall or Middle Tenn instead of UNC. Not! 🙂

BTI: Since the first game is guaranteed, why would you include it? In other words, when you say we should’ve played: 15 – 7 – 3- 1, it really should be 7 – 3 – 1 since there was nothing that could’ve changed us playing the 15 seed 1st.

That would make it THIRTY possible opponents instead of 40. Seeds held then in TWENTY of the matchups. That means the % of time the higher seed ‘holds true’ is actually 67% instead of 75%.

BTI, I believe it is a waste of time and energy to worry about anything in life, much less the possible basketball opponents down the road. But then you go on to validate the very reasons people are worried?

Ha i was going to bash you BTI and tell you that you proved the very point you were telling us was “was wasted energy and nonsense” but it seems a BUNCH of people beat me to it. You really do suck BTI!

When i read the post. I thought he was going to shed light on unusual occurances in NCAA tourny. Looks pretty chalk to me. Thats why fanbase is concerned bc chalk will give us difficult games! Idiot.

Id rather play Dayton. I think there style fits us better and it would be a blow out. Wichita would guve us difficult bc there style is not as up and down.

    1. If Witchita St was “properly” seeded we might still have played them in the 2nd round as a 7 seed, so what? Really, we’re playing the winner of two 7 seeds

    2. Good Lord, what a dark time 2006-2009 was for UK basketball.
