BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Who Do We Want to Play in Nashville?

SEC Tournament Feb 26, 2017

I’m not sure the fanbase and Coach Cal are ever going to get on the same page when it comes to the SEC Tournament.  He hates it, although less than in 2010, and we always will love it.  This year though I think is a real chance for UK to gain valuable games and experience in Nashville.  With Fox’s injury and this teams struggles the last month, the possible 3 games next week with hopefully a healthy Fox, can sharpen this team just in time for the NCAA Tournament.  But that will also require the best possible draw for that to happen.  There are a lot of crappy SEC teams and should UK get an easy draw in Nashville it won’t actually help much.

So what would the perfect draw look like for this team?  Here is what I would like to see:

Quarterfinals: Tennessee
Why: First, a chance to beat them for a 2nd time after UT beat us in Knoxville feels nice.  But I think more importantly this could be a really good game to get the Cats comfortable in the tournament.  Tennessee wouldn’t be a walkover but I am not sure they would be a threat to beat Kentucky either.  So a game that gets the Cats completely focused and a chance to win the season series over the Vols.  I’ll take it.

Semifinals: Arkansas
Why: Call me crazy but I think the Hogs have a real chance of pulling an upset in the NCAA Tournament.  It would be a quality win in my book and I am not sure the Cats got the Hogs best game back in January.  Plus a little flashback to the old 1990’s UK-Arkansas SEC battles would be nice.  I think Arkansas would be dangerous because they are fighting for improving their seed.  But its good to play a dangerous team because every team is dangerous in the NCAA Tournament.

Finals: Florida
Why: Shouldn’t have to explain this but UK needs to be pushed as much as possible in Nashville and no team is going to push them harder than the Gators.  I’d like to see the result with a healthy Fox on the floor too.  Florida has been hurt by injuries but they still have more than enough to beat the Cats and this would be the ultimate challenge to wrap up conference play.  If UK plays the Gators in the finals, they will have earned another SEC Tournament Championship.

So what about you?  Which 3 game gauntlet would you want the Cats to face in Nashville?

The only way they could play Arkansas based on current projections is in the finals.

That’s an old bracket up top…currently Arkansas is in 4th place behind UF and USC so BTI is right (ugh… I feel dirty having to say that).

Still some games left to be played though.

Although, current 8 & 9 teams are Georgia & TAMU so we wouldn’t see UT first game. Again… some teams have 2 games left, others just 1.

Actually that’s a REALLY old bracket… only 13 teams? Is this last years bracket when Mizzou was out of postseason play?

it’s missing LSU. this was a hypothetical from last week. not sure why they left lsu out but when a commenter mentioned it, they replaced the picture. apparently they reused the mistake

Well now, Bryan the Intern, that “sounds like bold talk for a one eyed fat man.” After watching the slackness in our defense, if the team doesn’t have stronger starts they may not beat the cheerleaders.

LSU doesn’t get to play in the SEC tournament this year?

They didn’t play in the post-season last year either. Turned down the NIT because Ben Simmons was afraid he’d get hurt…how’d that work out, he’s missing the entire NBA season, too.

No, it should be a full 14 team league this year…just think they filled out this years teams with last years bracket that had Missouri out for NCAA infractions.

So…reading this article while trying to refer to the bracket provided was a complete waste of time. Thanks KSR for another insightful and meaningful post BTI.

If we lose at A&M and Florida wins out, What is the tie-breaker to get us 1 Seed?
