BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Wednesday Morning Playcalling Breakdown (Charlotte)

Screen Shot 2015-11-21 at 9.14.33 PM

A rundown of how the DEFENSE performed this weekend against Charlotte, as well as combined season statistics over the first 11 games of the season.

1ST DOWN
Run: 20 rushes for 42 yards (2.1 ypc)
Pass: 3-7, 36 yards, 1 sack for -4 yards

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 217 rushes for 995 yards (4.6 ypc), 2 TD
Pass: 77-114, 1044 yards, 5 TD, 3 INT, 5 sacks for -16 yards

RECAP: For the first time since the Missouri game, the defense was DOMINANT on 1st down.  Did you see what happened when teams are forced into 2nd and long?  Good things.  A little late now, but an absolutely great performance.

2ND DOWN AND LONG (6 yards or more)
Run: 15 rushes for 112 yards (7.5 ypc)
Pass: 4-7, 10 yards

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 99 rushes for 601 yards, 1 TD (6.1 ypc), 1 TD
Pass: 45-84, 475 yards, 4 TD, 1 sack for -5 yards

RECAP: Cats did allow a couple lengthy runs in this scenario, although the game was out of hand when they occurred.  The pass defense was fantastic too.

2ND DOWN AND SHORT (5 yards or less)
Run: 2 rushes for 10 yards (5.0 ypc)
Pass: 1-1, 3 yards, 1 TD

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 55 rushes for 266 yards (4.8 ypc), 4 TD
Pass: 14-21, 76 yards, 1 TD

RECAP: Touchdown pass occurred after turnover so hard to criticize defense for that.  Otherwise, only 2 short runs.

3RD DOWN AND LONG (6 yards or more)
Run: 3 rushes for 10 yards (3.3 ypc) (converted 0 of 3)
Pass: 2-9, 29 yards, 2 INT, 2 sacks for -12 yards (converted 2 of 11)

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 18 rushes for 78 yards, 1 TD (4.3 ypc) (converted 3 of 18)
Pass: 36-73, 441 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, 6 sacks for -46 yards (converted 23 of 79)

RECAP: If there is one thing on defense the Cats have been good at in nearly every game its their pass defense on 3rd down.  And considering how many times over the year opponents converted 3rd and long through the air, that’s really an improvement.

3RD DOWN AND SHORT (5 yards or less)
Run: 3 rushes for 4 yards (1.3 ypc) (converted 1 of 3)
Pass: NONE

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 47 rushes for 176 yards (3.7 ypc), 8 TD (converted 31 of 44)
Pass: 8-15, 67 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, 2 sacks for -16 yards (converted 6 of 18)

RECAP: FINALLY.  The Cats stopped someone on 3rd and short with the run.  Only took 11 games and a pitiful Charlotte team, but hey, progress.

I can’t wait for game day!!! I know some some of the fan base is still down but YOU need to show up to the game. The crowd truly was a factor in the Florida game by being so loud that it caused the Gators to have false starts, timeouts, and be off sides. Five-Six plays like that could completely alter the outcome of the game. BBN show up rain or not and be loud on all downs are D is out there not just 3rd.
