BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Using Past Final Fours to Justify This Year’s Chances

brandon-knight-laughing

Can you envision this team making the Final Four?  Of course not.  The obvious word to describe this team right now is “regression”.  And in a sad twist, they’ve honestly seem to lost the fans too.  The overblown “laughing” issue with Malik Monk is one thing.  I don’t care about that at all.  For me, I don’t know where the EFFORT has gone.  The team flat out quit against Florida and on the defensive end, the effort has been questionable for quite some time.  There is something missing right now from this team and now heading towards March, if this team is going to figure it out, now is the time.

OK, that’s all the bad stuff.  Let’s try and look at the positives.  We still have, in theory, one of the more talented teams in the country.  The overall depth of great teams isn’t there in college basketball this year.  John Calipari has a knack for most of his teams playing their best in March.  But I am going to take a positive spin on things using past Final Four teams at Kentucky.  Since Adolph Rupp left, UK has had 11 Final Four teams.  And when I looked at each of those teams, I found a few interesting nuggets:

1974-75
-Lost 3 games to unranked SEC opponents
-Went just 4-2 in their final 6 regular season games
-Had just 2 players average over 11 points per game (Grevey, Conner)

1977-78
-Lost 2 games to unranked SEC opponents
-Won just 2 games against ranked opponents before tournament
-Did not PLAY a ranked opponent from January on until NCAA Tournament

1983-84
-Lost 4 games to unranked SEC opponents
-Won 2 games in SEC Tournament by just 2 points, both to unranked opponents

1992-93
-Lost 2 games to unranked SEC opponents
-Lost 2 games in February
-Won 2 of final 3 games of regular season by single digits against unranked teams

1995-96
-Lost SEC Tournament championship by 11

1996-97
-Lost final regular season game and at home
-Had only 2 double-digit scorers (Mercer, Anderson)

1997-98
-Lost 2 SEC games at home, including one to an unranked team

2010-11
-Lost 6 games to unranked opponents
-Lost 4 games in February
-Won just 2 regular season games by more than 10 points from February on
-Only had 6 players average 8 minutes or more per game

2011-12
-Lost SEC Tournament championship game

2013-14
-Lost 4 of last 7 regular season games
-Lost 7 games overall since January

2014-15
-Ummmmmmm……………nothing?

So, what’s the point?  The point is that most of these teams had some kind of glaring hole in the roster or weren’t necessarily killing it all the way into March.  It only emphasizes more that the NCAA Tournament is a completely random event.  Hell, a couple of Cal’s teams have randomly made the Final Four.  And this team has more than enough to randomly win 4 games.  I am not saying that if things don’t improve I would still pick this team to make a run.  They obviously need some improvement but giving up on this team now is a bad idea.  Most of the teams above had some kind of struggle and things turned around quite nicely.

Wow, that is exactly what I have been thinking. We could certainly count on him for 7-10 rebounds a few blocks and definitely 8-14 points even if all from lobs and dunks. His athleticism could provide the interior spark that our current 4-position guys just don’t naturally have.
Wenyen and Willis are more stretch-4 guys who thrive more from beyond 18 feet. Having all three guys would provide the balance that this team needs but that is now just a wish.

We have time to pull things together and play to our potential but a margin for error becomes more slim every game.

Did the Final Four teams you listed avoid defense like the plague?
You don’t make the FF unless you play defense.
