BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Unranked Florida Squads Been a Struggle for Cats

Over the last 25 years, Kentucky and Florida have had some of the greatest battles in the SEC during that time.  They have been the 2 most consistent programs since UK got off probation in 1992.  But tonight’s game doesn’t match up 2 of the better teams in either school’s history.  UK remains ranked but near the back end of the rankings and Florida has really never been a Top 25 team this year.  When hunting through the record books though, I found that UK has traveled to Gainesville many times and faced off against unranked Florida teams.  In fact, since 1992, UK has played unranked Florida teams a total of 13 times on the road.  Those 13 results:

1992: LOSS, 79-62
1993: WIN, 85-77
1994: LOSS, 59-57
1996: WIN, 94-63
1997: WIN, 92-65
1998: WIN, 79-54
1999: LOSS, 75-68
2005: LOSS, 53-52
2008: LOSS, 81-70 (UK also unranked)
2009: LOSS, 60-53 (UK also unranked)
2010: WIN, 89-77
2011: LOSS, 70-68
2015: WIN, 68-51

In 11 of these 13 games, UK came into the game ranked and Florida was not.  In those 11 games, UK went just 6-5.  Add in the 2 Billy Gillispie years and UK is just 6-7 against unranked Florida teams in Gainesville since 1992.

So, UK must buckle down in what has been a difficult environment overall.  Calipari is just 3-3 at Florida in his career.  So for whatever reason, UK has struggled at the O-Dome even with the better team many times.  They certainly have the better team this year as Mike White doesn’t have the normal talent that Billy Donovan had.  And Donovan’s tenure might have much to do with the Gator success over UK, even with unranked teams.  Maybe White will bring the program back down to where the O-Dome doesn’t become a hostile place to play anymore.  But it would be nice to set the tone early tonight in the Calipari-White “rivalry”.

If I am not mistaken Billy D. did not have a winning record over any UK coach while at UF not even with Billy G. Games at UF are hard to win not just because UF usually is competitive but the student section energizes the UF players. While when there is a sellout crowd in college basketball the officials usually give the home team a majority of the 50/50 calls and non-calls. When I hear that a controversial call may have decided a game the first thing I ask is who was the home team.
