I find it hard to believe the Kansas game tomorrow will not come down to the wire.  After a multitude of blowouts during the non-conference season, UK has had a bunch of close games in the last month with some wins and some losses.  But are we starting to see some trends on who will be getting the ball in crunch time and who is going to see the floor the most?  Below are the 6 games where the outcome was in doubt during the last segment of the game.  A crunch time game in this scenario begin defined as any game within 2 possessions (6 points) inside the 4-minute mark of the 2nd half.

UCLA
(4:00 min) Adebayo: 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2-3 FG, 3-4 FT

(4:00 min) Briscoe: no stats
(3:10 min) Humphries: 1 rebound
(2:56 min) Gabriel: 1 rebound, 1 turnover

VANDERBILT

(4:00 min) Adebayo: 2 rebounds
(4:00 min) Monk: 6 points, 1-1 FG, 4-4 FT
(3:58 min) Willis: 1 rebound
(0:02 min) Hawkins: no stats

MISSISSIPPI STATE
(4:00 min) Fox: 9 points, 1 rebound, 3-4 FG, 0-1 3P, 3-5 FT
(4:00 min) Briscoe: 2 points, 1 rebound, 0-1 FG, 2-2 FT

(0:52 min) Willis: 1 rebound

TENNESSEE
(4:00 min) Adebayo: 2 points, 1 rebound, 1-1 FG
(4:00 min) Monk: 4 points, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 1-4 FG, 1-4 3P, 1-2 FT
(4:00 min) Willis: 1 rebound
(3:24 min) Briscoe: 5 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 2-2 FG, 1-1 3P
(3:22 min) Fox: 5 points, 1 steal, 1 turnover, 2-2 FG, 1-1 3P
(0:38 min) Hawkins: no stats
(0:36 min) Gabriel: no stats

COMBINED CRUNCH TIME STATS (24 total minutes)
(24:00 min) Monk: 25 points, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 turnover, 7-15 fg, 5-12 3p, 6-8 ft
(22:37 min) Briscoe: 11 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 turnover, 4-9 fg, 1-4 3p, 2-2 ft
(21:53 min) Fox: 27 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, 3 turnovers, 9-13 fg, 2-5 3p, 7-10 ft
(20:47 min) Adebayo: 10 points, 7 rebounds, 3-4 fg, 4-8 ft
(17:51 min) Willis: 4 points, 4 rebound, 1-1 fg, 1-1 3p, 1-2 ft
(5:44 min) Gabriel: 2 rebounds, 1 turnover
(3:58 min) Hawkins: no stats
(3:10 min) Humphries: 1 rebound

So, judging from these numbers you can come to a few undeniable conclusions:

  1. It’s the Monk and Fox show down the stretch.  Of the 79 points scored in those 24 minutes, Monk and Fox have scored 52 of them.  Of the 42 shots taken, Monk and Fox have take 28 of them.
  2. Briscoe is making the good passes.  While Fox leads the team in assists and is an incredible distributor of the basketball, it has been Briscoe who has the most assists in crunch time, with 5 and just 1 turnover.  Fox’s assist:turnover ratio is just 3:3.
  3. Bam is not getting the ball.  4 shots in 6 crunch time games.  And it’s not like he isn’t in the floor.  He’s been on the floor for more than 20 minutes of the possible 24 minutes but still just 4 shots and 3 of those came against UCLA.
  4. Willis is getting the play over Gabriel at the 4-spot.

Thoughts on the Cats crunch time play and if there is something you’d like to see more of.

By Hawkins, it should say: “defense, stat cannot estimate value”😉

    Interesting facts!

Bam clearly needs the ball more. Not just at crunch time, but throughout the game. Just put him on the same side as Monk, force the double and kick it out. It ain’t rocket science 🙂

Instead of taking 6 or 7 horrible shots per game, maybe Monk can cut it down to 2 or 3.

Hope to see them get it to Bam more down the stretch. Big man can hit his foul shots!

Speaks for itself in my opinion. Look at Bam’s Field Goal Percentage (75%). Give him the ball and when they start doubling down….. Kick it out for a… wait for it, wait for it….. OPEN, I repeat OPEN jumper. Anybody ever heard of those down the stretch?
