BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Tuesday Morning Defensive Breakdown (Georgia)

2

1st Down
Pass: 4-11, 43 yards
Run: 23 rushes for 95 yards (4.1 ypc)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 67-117, 959 yards, 8 TD, 4 INT, 2 sacks for -18 yards

Run: 174 rushes for 852 yards (4.9 ypc), 5 TD

RECAP: Awesome defense by the Cats here.  Georgia tried and tried again to run the ball against the Cats to start their set of downs and UK stuffed them most of the time.  And when the Dawgs did try to pass, they did so to little success.  One of UK’s better performances on 1st down.

2nd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Pass: 5-9, 68 yards

Run: 10 rushes for 61 yards (6.1 ypc), 1 TD

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 36-69, 420 yards, 1 TD, 3 sacks for -14 yards
Run: 80 rushes for 459 yards (5.7 ypc), 3 TD

RECAP: Here’s a telling group of plays.  At the end of the 3rd quarter, on 2nd and long, Georgia had run 12 plays for 28 yards.  In the fourth quarter alone, Georgia ran 7 plays for 101 yards and a touchdown.  The UK defense just completely ran out of steam in the 4th quarter.  It’s too bad because they dominated UGA through 3 quarters, especially in this situation.

2nd Down and Short (5 yards or less)
Pass: 2-2, 67 yards

Run: 4 rushes for 25 yards (6.3 ypc)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 14-16, 141 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT
Run: 56 rushes for 319 yards (5.7 ypc), 2 TD

RECAP: Only 6 plays here showing just how good UK was doing on 1st down but UGA hit 2 big plays through the air.  For some weird reason UK has struggled mightily on 2nd and short pass plays.
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––—

3rd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Pass: 5-8, 62 yards, 1 TD (converted 1 of 8)

Run: No Plays

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 28-49, 373 yards, 3 TD, 2 INT, 2 sacks for -8 yards (converted 18 of 51)
Run: 15 rushes for 82 yards (5.5 ypc) (converted 2 of 15)

RECAP: In a weird stat, UGA completed 5 passes on 3rd and long and yet only converted 1 for a first down, the touchdown in the 1st quarter.  So UK did a nice job of tackling here and keep receivers in front of them.

3rd Down and Short (5 yards or less)
Pass: 1-1, 5 yards (converted 1 of 1)

Run: 5 rushes for 34 yards (6.8 ypc) (converted 4 of 5)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 13-21, 134 yards, 1 TD, 7 sacks for -43 yards (converted 12 of 29)
Run: 37 rushes for 174 yards (4.7 ypc), 2 TD (converted 27 of 37)

RECAP: Not great here.  UGA converts 5 of 6 3rd and short chances.  UK has struggled most of the season in this scenario.
