BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Tuesday Morning Defensive Breakdown (Eastern Kentucky)

Each Tuesday I will break down the defensive numbers in hopefully a more interesting way that you normally see.  I like to see if there are certain situations where the UK defense excels, based on down and distance.  I will also keep a running count of the stats over the course of the season.  Against Eastern Kentucky UK’s run defense was awesome again but EKU adjusted and really seemed to control the game with an efficient pass attack.  Even still, overall the defense was solid once again and bodes well for the SEC season.

1st Down
Pass: 11-19, 84 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Run: 8 rushes for 23 yards (2.9 ypc), 1 TD

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 18-34, 220 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Run: 24 rushes for 53 yards (2.2 ypc)

Breakdown: EKU focused on throwing the ball primarily on 1st down and for good reason.  UK’s run defense on first down has been AWESOME so far.  Just 2.2 yards per carry is an incredible number, even against sub-par competition.  It will be very interesting to see against South Carolina if this kind of run defense will continue.
2nd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Pass: 10-11, 98 yards
Run: 4 rushes for 19 yards (4.8 ypc)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 18-24, 175 yards, 1 TD
Run: 12 rushes for 47 yards (3.9 ypc)

Breakdown: UK’s pass defense played very conservative in these situations and not really sure why.  EKU was willing to take 7-10 yards all day and it allowed them to get into 3rd and short situations and grind the clock down.  Rush defense was solid again.

2nd Down and Short (5 yards or fewer)
Pass: 2-3, 6 yards
Run: 3 rushes for 21 yards (7.0 ypc)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 3-4, 48 yards, 1 TD
Run: 7 rushes for 28 yards (4.0 ypc)

Breakdown: Not much to examine here but defense was solid.
3rd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Pass: 3-4, 37 yards, 1 sack for -15 yards (converted 1 of 5)
Run: 1 rush for 3 yards  (3.0 ypc) (converted 0 of 1)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 8-12, 72 yards, 3 sacks for -32 yards (converted 3 of 15)
Run: 2 rushes for 7 yards (converted 0 of 4)

Breakdown: Interesting stat here is that for the season UK has allowed 8 completions on 3rd and long but only 3 of them went for first downs.  This shows improved tackling and good schemes.  UK allowed just 3 of 19 for the season.  Awesome here.

3rd Down and Short (5 yards or more)
Pass: 5-6, 31 yards (converted 3 of 6)
Run: 2 rushes for 9 yards (4.5 ypc) (converted 2 of 2)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 6-8, 45 yards (converted 4 of 8)
Run: 6 rushes for 23 yards (3.8 ypc) (converted 4 of 6)

Breakdown: EKU clearly thought throwing the ball was a better option here and UK still did a pretty decent job stopping them 3 times.  These are the “tough” plays and UK has had average success on defense so far.
