There have been some really memorable clashes between Kentucky and Kansas over the last 30 years and for a variety of reasons. There were the infamous Kansas blowouts of 1989 and 2006. Then Kentucky’s payback in 1990. And Kentucky winning the title over the Jayhawks in 2012. But one game that gets forgotten often is the classic the 2 teams played in the 1999 NCAA Tournament 2nd round. There are a variety of reasons I can guess:
- It was a 2nd round game and barring a buzzer beater, these games are often forgotten.
- The ’99 team fell short of the Final Four. If that had been a Final Four team, people would remember the run more vividly and how they survived Kansas.
But this game really had it all. A combined 23 three pointers. The stars all played well, including Kentucky’s seniors of Padgett, Evans, and Turner. And the game played in Superdome added a level of uniqueness that you don’t get very often. So while people will talk about several different Kansas games before this one, I think visually this was one of the best games to watch between the 2 teams:
