BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Some Friday Non-UCLA Oddities

It’s a Friday and we are all recovering from last night’s late start time, so every now and then I like to post some of the oddities that people don’t know about or think could be true when it comes to UK basketball.  Using Jon Scott’s lovely website, I dug through the numbers and came up with this group of interesting notes that I hope makes you think a little on this Friday:

-11 of the top 21 scorers in UK history only played 3 seasons

-The player who came closest to breaking the 1,000 point barrier but didn’t was Jared Prickett, with 998 points

-Kentucky has retired the jerseys of players who rank #106, #109, #115, #119, #120, #122, #162, #181, #190, and #194 on the career scoring list.

-Kentucky hasn’t retired the jersey of the #4 (Bogans), #8 (Prince), #11 (Davender), #13 (Patterson), #14 (Casey), #16 (Turpin), or #20 (Joe Crawford) career scorers.

-It took Dan Issel 8 less games to score 94 more points than Jodie Meeks on the single season scoring list

-Dan Issel, Jodie Meeks, and Cliff Hagan hold 9 of the top 10 spots on the single game scoring list

-6 times an opposing player has scored 50 or more points against UK, all 6 were either Pete Maravich or Austin Carr

-Austin Carr scored 52 points against UK in an NCAA Tournament game, no other player has scored more than 36

-UK’s Top 5 in SEC Tournament scoring are Cliff Hagan, Alex Groza, Jim Line, Jack Parkinson, and Wah Wah Jones

-16 times a UK player has been chosen as SEC Tournament MVP.  Only Travis Ford was selected twice.

-If Anthony Davis had played 4 years and blocked the same number of shots each year (186), he would hold the career blocks record at UK by 476 blocks.

-Kentucky has never had any players from Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Delaware, South Carolina, Minnesota, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Hawaii, Wyoming, or Nebraska.

-11 of the 20 NBA titles Kentucky alums have won came with the Boston Celtics

-Despite his recruiting reputation, Rick Pitino did not have a single McDonald’s All-American in 5 of his 8 classes

-Kentucky did not have a single left-handed player on roster from the 1991/92 through 1996/97 seasons.

-UK has only had 2 players serve in the military since 1970: Charles Hurt and Carlos Toomer

-Only 1 UK player has ever lived past the age of 100: Basil Hayden

-UK has never lost to an opponent ranked #22 in the AP poll (8-0 all-time)

-The longest tenure for the same group of assistant coaches at Kentucky was 5 years.  Those were the last 5 years of the Tubby Smith era with Hobbs, Hanson, and Rigot (We are talking the modern world of assistants, not when Rupp only had 1 guy)

-Adolph Rupp only had 1 undefeated team, that team did not win the national title (1954)

If Jared had hit his free throws, we would have another title and he would have broken 1000. Or if Pitino had played Derek Anderson to help the hobbled Mercer.

So I’ve always wondered if UK’s Basil Hayden was related to the bourbon of the same name. I’ve only seen one place claim that he was a grandson of the original Basil Hayden, Sr. But I don’t trust the veracity of that source.

Can anyone help a brotha out?
