BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Road To The SEC Title Rough for Cats

UK
UK

Mathematically, only Missouri has been eliminated from contention for the SEC regular season title this year.  But realistically, I think most would agree there are really 5 teams vying for the title: Kentucky, LSU, South Carolina, Texas A&M, and Florida.  Of all the amazing accomplishments during the Calipari era, one interesting one that is not so amazing is he’s only won the the SEC title in 3 of 6 years when the league has not been seriously competitive.  Part of that is due to the great run of Florida under Billy Donovan.  Nonetheless, UK has it’s hands full the rest of way is trying to win their 173rd conference title.  We know that UK’s schedule is daunting but what about the other contenders.  Below are each team’s remaining schedule, both home and away, and the combined conference record of those remaining opponents:

KENTUCKY (8-3)
Home: Tennessee, Alabama, LSU
Away: South Carolina, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Florida
COMBINED: 46-31

SOUTH CAROLINA (8-3)
Home: Kentucky, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia
Away: Missouri, Mississippi St, Arkansas
COMBINED: 35-42

LSU (8-3)
Home: Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida, Missouri
Away: Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky
COMBINED: 38-39

TEXAS A&M (7-4)
Home: Ole Miss, Kentucky, Mississippi St, Vanderbilt
Away: LSU, Missouri, Auburn
COMBINED: 34-43

FLORIDA (7-4)
Home: Alabama, Vanderbilt, Kentucky
Away: Georgia, South Carolina, LSU, Missouri
COMBINED: 42-35

Yikes.  First off, Kentucky is facing the toughest slate of games of these 5 teams no matter home or away.  But they also have 4 road games remaining while LSU, USC, and A&M have just 3.  Also, they still have to play each of the other 4 teams once while this isn’t the case for any of the others.

Now, you can look at this a couple ways.  On the one hand, UK’s road to the title is the hardest of these 5 times.  It’s hard to argue against that.  On that other hand, UK can totally earn this.  If they beat these 4 teams over the next few weeks they will earn the title.  They won’t earn it by beating Missouri down the stretch like the other 4 teams get to do.  UK can literally break the hopes and dreams of these teams to win a rare SEC title, often on those team’s home floors.

What do you think about the schedule down the stretch?  UK should be good and tested by the SEC Tournament and NCAA Tournament but their road to the title is tough.

I hate to say it but I just don’t think this team is up for the challenge of all those road games. I’m afraid we’re probably looking at another two to four losses before the end of the season. If they can make it to the sweet sixteen, that’s probably about all we can reasonably expect.

I don’t understand how anybody can look at this team and think the sweet 16 is their ceiling.

You think the sweet sixteen is too high or too low?

Bearing in mind, of course, the single elimination nature of the NCAA tournament.

I think you’re telling us more about you than you are about the team. And that’s cool. We’re all different. I’m wondering whether we can sweep. We certainly appear to be playing our best basketball at the right time.

There are a couple of good points in there. BTI, who wrote this for you?

We are the “Forest Gump Team” this year, ie life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. This statement is especially true when you talk about road games. If we play like we have lately at home and like we played against Kansas on the road then we should win most if not all these road games. This would require a lot of improvement from what they have done so far on the road this season.

If you think that winning only 3 of 6 SEC regular-season titles under Cal is surprising you should check Pitino’s record. If memory serves in the 6 seasons his teams were eligible he won only one title and that was the 96 team. Amazingly he won every SEC Tournament except for 96.

He also won the SEC title in ’95 with a 14-2 record.

Lexjim. I’m as big of a Pitino hater as the next, but don’t forget to mention that Arkansas was a beast back then, and even Mississippi State made final four. In recent history, other than a few years of Florida being good, SEC has been terrible. I do look at the scenario in two ways however, on one hand Kentucky should win all these games the fact that they are the better team, and may possibly be the only ranked team in the SEC. On the other hand, they have shown that they can lose to virtually anybody on the road. If Auburn and Tennessee has taught us anything, this team may be great, or borderline terrible

I’m a fan of yours BTI, and I apologize for being this guy, but one does not “literally” break hopes and dreams. That is as figurative as it gets. Keep up the good work.

But hopes and dreams actually exist, so … It’s a good question. Hm.
