BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: UK set to have Absurd Number of Ohio Players in 2016

Yesterday on the show, Matt and a couple callers talked about how the football roster has changed over the 3 years of Mark Stoops.  A higher proportion of Ohio players and a drop in the Alabama pipeline.  But just what are the numbers for 2015?  Below is the roster breakdown by home state, as well as how many of the Class of 2015 recruits came from those states:

22: Ohio (5 in 2015)
16: Florida (5 in 2015)
12: Kentucky (2 in 2015)
10: Georgia (3 in 2015)
4: South Carolina (1 in 2015)
3: Alabama (1 in 2015)
3: Washington DC (3 in 2015)
2: Illinois
2: Texas
2: Tennessee
1: Mississippi
1: New Jersey (1 in 2015)
1: North Carolina (1 in 2015)
1: Massachusetts
1: California
1: Indiana
1: Maryland

After Alabama and Georgia were such pipelines in the Joker-era, only 4 recruits came from there in 2015.  Compared to 10 who came from Ohio and Florida, along with 3 from the Washington DC area alone.  Then take a look at the amount of seniors on roster this year and compare them to the total above and you’ll see the

4: Georgia
2: South Carolina, Illinois, Kentucky
1: Texas, Tennessee, Massachusetts, California, Ohio, Mississippi, Florida

So consider this fact, with only 1 Ohio-bred senior on the roster this year, plus ELEVEN Ohio recruits committed to UK in the Class of 2016, there could be as many as 32 players from the state of Ohio on next year’s team.  That’s an incredible number and I would bet the most from one state on the UK roster in many, many years.

They can come from Mars as long as they win.

Green players who could fly would be cool. Is there anything in the rule book against players flying? Is actual contact with the turn a requirement?

  4. I hate to keep dumping on Joker because he’s a good guy from all accounts, but I think this shows another flaw. However, it wasn’t just him. I think most (all?) former UK coaches didn’t think they could compete with OSU in recruiting, and Stoops has shown it can be done. Maybe they couldn’t have done as well as Stoops because he already had major connections, but I have a feeling some of them could have recruited Ohio better than the deep south. Stoops said himself I think that one thing he sells is how close to home these guys will be playing. Not so for guys from FL, GA, Bama.

Granted, OSU is still pretty much getting the pick of the litter (when we get a CJ Conrad they’re probably getting a TE, or even 2, just as good or better), but we’re still getting plenty guys that are high on their list and that didn’t happen before.

In the 40’s-50’s so many Kentuckians left the state and moved to Ohio for jobs. We gave Ohio our best and now we are getting some of the best back.

Recruiting GA, SC and Al your are going to always end up with 3rd or 4th choice. The best players are going to go to Tech, GA, AU, Clemson, SC and Alabama. In Ohio we can get 2nd best or every once in a while land a OSU player, OSU recruits nationally and maybe over stacked at position and we can steal a top player. Florida has always been loaded with talent. There is only one SEC school in Florida. What harm is it to recruit and offer players down there. This staff is doing it and it is working. It has always driven me crazy why we didn’t recruit Ohio and Florida better. Kudos to the staff.

The talent is on the rise, which can only mean good things are ahead.
