BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: No Excuses Tomorrow…….

I feel like a lot this season we have found reasons to justify various performances by the Cats, both in wins and losses.  For example:

-Missing Jared Vanderbilt early in the season

-Quade Green injury

-PJ Washington foul trouble against Tennessee

-Bounce back performance against Vandy after big win over West Virginia

-Of course, youth of the team

Some of these excuses have been more legitimate than others but nonetheless they have been the talking points throughout the year.  I think starting tomorrow, the excuses end.  I understand the game against Missouri is on the road.  I understand this Missouri team is more talented than any Calipari has faced.  I also understand the following facts:

  1. They are 4-5 in the SEC.  They lost to Illinois, the worst team in the Big 10.  And they lost to the same West Virginia team we just beat.
  2. They’re not hot.  They’ve lost 3 out of their last 4 SEC games, all by double digits.
  3. No more issues with rebounding from the excitement of the WVU win.
  4. Jared Vanderbilt has been in the regular rotation for 5 games.  He’s in game shape now.
  5. Youth is no longer an excuse.  These guys now have 22 games under their belts.  They’ve all played significant minutes.  They’ve played in tight games both at home and on the road.  These freshman have more minutes than almost any freshmen in the country.  Inexperience is not an excuse anymore.

If this team seriously has aspirations to make a Final Four and win an SEC crown, beating a 4-5 SEC team is a requirement, no matter what.  This team has the bench to combat any foul trouble.  This team does not have an obvious hole that can be used as an excuse anymore.

I’m not sure how tomorrow is going to end up.  The Cats could absolutely lose.  But my argument is they shouldn’t.  If they do though, the time for excuses is over.  It’s go time this season.  For me, it starts tomorrow because that is the type of game that champion contenders win.

Well, no, because they are still freshmen. They are not mature players!

If games could be won by “words written by fans” on sports sites, we would win every game!

See, the thing about youth … while we have gotten older and more mature, so has everyone else!!!!!

Ummm…I think they lost to WVa by four, lost to Florida by two, and beat Tennessee.
And they just beat a decent Alabama team on their home floor. They also beat Iowa State.

Exactly. They have two top 25 wins and destroyed Iowa State.

Jarred is not remotely in game shape. Playing a max of 2-min stretches is hardly game shape. Shai is in game shape. Vanderbilt is maybe at 30%. Within two weeks hopefully will be at 80%, and then 90% heading into March.

He won’t get to 100% this season. Not a chance I’m afraid.

However, if we can give us 20 minutes a game by mid to late Feb, and then maybe 25 minutes in March, we will be in good shape. 20 minutes a game ought to yield 10 rebounds, 3 assists, and most importantly a better defense!!! If we get 4 points a game from him, that’ll be nice.

Think Dennis Rodman numbers. Wouldn’t you be happy with 10 rebounds and 3 assists and scrappy play that elevates team defense and demoralizes the other team? Of course! We don’t need his offense.

And he could very well be our most important recruit for next year’s team. Hope he stays. I’m afraid he gone though, along with Knox and Alexander. And possibly Nick, if he finishes strong. Can’t teach big.

My thought exactly. A player isn’t it Game Shape after 5 games.

Washington only had one foul against Tennessee. He wasn’t able to play in 2nd half due to leg cramps.
