BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Tuesday Morning Playcalling Breakdown (Charlotte)

char1

The breakdown of the offensive production in various situations against Charlotte, as well as the combined season statistics through 11 games in each of those situations:

1ST DOWN
Run: 23 rushes for 143 yards (6.2 ypc), 2 TD
Pass: 2-8, 12 yards

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 169 rushes for 930 yards (5.5 ypc), 5 TD
Pass: 83-144, 952 yards, 6 TD, 6 INT, 8 sacks for -50 yards

RECAP: Good the thing the rushing attack was so good because the passing game was poor.  Nonetheless, UK was able to run at will most of the game against Charlotte, showing domination at the line of scrimmage we haven’t seen in a long time.

2ND DOWN AND LONG (6 yards or more)
Run: 8 rushes for 185 yards (23.1 ypc), 2 TD
Pass: 4-9, 12 yards, 1 sack for -5 yards

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 79 rushes for 548 yards (6.9 ypc), 3 TD
Pass: 48-89, 459 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT, 5 sacks for -30 yards

RECAP: WOW!  Huge rushing plays all over the chart for this one.  Boom, Kemp, and King all with huge plays here.  Much like first down though, the passing game was not very good.  But when you rush it this well, it doesn’t have to be.

2ND DOWN AND SHORT (5 yards or less)
Run: 1 rush for 4 yards (4.0 ypc)
Pass: 1-2, 15 yards

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 39 rushes for 138 yards (3.5 ypc), 6 TD
Pass: 16-22, 123 yards, 1 INT

RECAP: Only 3 plays run in this scenario the entire game so not much to analyze here.  Overall, on 1st and 2nd down, Barker was 7-19 for 34 yards.

3RD DOWN AND LONG (6 yards or more)
Run: 2 rushes for 13 yards (6.5 ypc) (converted 1 of 2)
Pass: 7-8, 63 yards, 1 sack for -6 yards (converted 3 of 9)

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 16 rushes for 169 yards (10.6 ypc), 1 TD (converted 9 of 16)
Pass: 45-77, 614 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT, 8 sacks for -53 yards (converted 26 of 85)

RECAP: UK continues to struggle to gain 1st downs through the air, although the completion percentage was high.  This shows they continually threw passes before the first down markers, a common annoyance for UK fans.

3RD DOWN AND SHORT (5 yards or less)
Run: 3 rushes for 66 yards (22.0 ypc), 1 TD (converted 3 of 3)
Pass: 1-1, 12 yards (converted 1 of 1)

Combined Season Statistics
Run: 28 rushes for 159 yards (5.7 ypc) (converted 17 of 28)
Pass: 9-24, 98 yards, 4 sacks for -33 yards (converted 8 of 28)

RECAP: Not a lot of 3rd and short chances, but unlike most games this season, UK converted the chances they had, going 4 for 4 against Charlotte.
