BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Monday Morning Offensive Playcalling Breakdown (Tennessee)

UK Athletics

UK Athletics

UK Athletics

1st Down
Pass: 3-10, 48 yards, 1 INT, 2 sacks for -17 yards

Run: 29 rushes for 332 yards (11.4 ypc), 4 TD

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 47-85, 629 yards, 3 TD, 3 INT, 6 sacks for -46 yards (1 fumble lost)
Run: 219 rushes for 1,387 yards (6.3 ypc), 8 TD

RECAP: I say this sarcastically because I understand the situation dictates this sometimes, but it’s amazing UK would even dare to drop back to pass 12 times when they are averaging over 11 yards every carry.  Those numbers are almost unbelievable considering UK lost the game by 13 but the rushing attack was just lethal against UT.  Considering what UK has coming back next year, its very exciting to think what this rushing attack could be.  If Johnson could develop a more consistent throw plus more dependable receivers, I truly believe UK could have one of the best offenses in the SEC.

2nd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Pass: 4-6, 67 yards, 1 sack for -6 yards

Run: 13 rushes for 85 yards (6.5 ypc)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 32-53, 432 yards, 3 TD, 3 INT, 8 sacks for -51 yards (1 fumble lost)
Run: 100 rushes for 603 yards (6.0 ypc)

RECAP: This is the one situation Johnson had some nice success throwing the ball but the rushing attack was potent again.

2nd Down and Short (5 yards or less)
Pass: 0-1

Run: 5 rushes for 26 yards (5.2 ypc)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 9-14, 172 yards, 1 TD, 1 sack for -5 yards (1 fumble lost)
Run: 45 rushes for 227 yards (5.0 ypc), 4 TD

RECAP: Not a lot of plays to go by here but UK still ran for over 5 yards per carry, a little bit above their season average.
–––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

3rd Down and Long (6 yards or more)
Pass: 3-9, 69 yards, 1 sack for -7 yards (converted 3 of 10)

Run: No plays

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 25-58, 417 yards, 4 TD, 3 INT, 8 sacks for -65 yards (converted 17 of 66)
Run: 16 rushes for 105 yards (6.6 ypc), 1 TD (converted 2 of 12)

RECAP: Johnson did convert 3 times with nice passes but this scenario is where the receivers did him no favors with multiple drops.  For the season, UK has only converted 17 times on 3rd and long despite dropping back to pass 66 times.  That’s not good.

3rd Down and Short (5 yards or less)
Pass: 2-3, 8 yards (converted 1 of 3)

Run: 4 rushes for 29 yards (7.3 ypc) (converted 3 of 4)

Combined Season Statistics
Pass: 9-20, 83 yards, 1 INT, 2 sacks for -4 yards (converted 8 of 21)
Run: 32 rushes for 217 yards (6.8 ypc) (converted 23 of 32)

RECAP: Solid production on the ground although the brutal fumble by Snell is included here.  Otherwise, UK has been pretty dependable all year in converting 3rd and short on the ground.

I have not posted in a while but what happened to all of the comments? I remember when there would be hundreds of comments but now I mostly see zero or just a couple. What did I miss? Thanks!

4th and goal on the 2 yard line and we kick a field goal, ridiculous.
4th and 13 on the 40 yard line and punt into the end zone, ridiculous.
These are coaching decisions that will never make a coach great.
I believe that very few will remember that we went for it and failed, but we all will remember that we didn’t even try. These two plays were a huge setback for Coach Stoops that I felt had finally turned the corner and was headed in the right direction. The old Coach Stoops showed up last Saturday.
We have to stop turning the ball over at crucial times.
Where did the defense go? Any defense would have won the game for us.
That being said, I am sooooo excited about what we can do on offense in the future.

For the second week in a row the defense just didn’t show up but we could have still won both games with more diverse play calling. We repeatedly stalled in the red zone because we kept running the one dimensional Wildcat making it easier to defend us. I about came out of my seat when we lined up in the Wildcat on 2nd and 12 inside the 15.We ended up with FGs when we could have had TDs.
