BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Miss State Maybe the Biggest Calipari Whipping Boy

The Cats headed to the rowdiest, most exciting, always most fun SEC road opponent tonight, Mississippi State.  And if you believe that statement, you’ll also think that the Bulldogs will actually be a competitive opponent for UK tonight.  Because in a 7-year stretch where UK has more or less dominated the league, Mississippi State is one of only 2 teams that John Calipari has not lost to while at Kentucky.  The other, Missouri, only joined the league in 2012.  And it’s not just that the Cats have not lost to the Bulldogs under Cal, the margin of victory has been one of the best in this era as well.  Here are the overall records for Calipari against each SEC school and the margin of victory for each:

Mississippi State: 9-0 (Avg. Margin: 12.0)
Missouri: 5-0 (Avg. Margin: 24.2)
Auburn: 9-1 (Avg. Margin: 15.9)
Ole Miss: 9-1 (Avg. Margin: 12.3)
Georgia: 11-2 (Avg. Margin: 11.9)
Alabama: 10-2 (Avg. Margin: 11.8)
LSU: 9-2 (Avg. Margin: 10.6)
South Carolina: 9-2 (Avg. Margin: 17.9)
Texas A&M: 5-2 (Avg. Margin: 8.9)
Tennessee: 10-3 (Avg. Margin: 6.6)
Vanderbilt: 11-4 (Avg. Margin: 2.7)
Arkansas: 6-4 (Avg. Margin: 10.6)
Florida: 12-6 (Avg. Margin: 5.8)

Now, some might argue this means that Mississippi State is due to beat UK.  And I am sure at some point in the Cal tenure it will happen.  Ben Howland is a very good coach, the talent level is somewhat up in Starksville.  But frankly, until the Bulldogs actually prove they can compete with the Cats, whether the game is here or there, I don’t get concerned about this game.

I stare at the Vanderbilt record and can’t quite comprehend them in relation to the rest of the league. Why do they seem to play us better than everyone else on average?

because of their joke of an arena, more or less.

An arena built to negate coaching so they don’t have to hire well.

    Miss State beat Arkansas on the road; UK was only up 3 on Arkansas at the half;
I hope the team doesn’t share your opinion.

I believe similar words were written before the Auburn Game last year……If Kentucky doesn’t show up then this perfect record will change.

No road game is a given…none! Got to be prepared to play, have to execute the game plan and have to give 100% effort for 40 minutes…no road game is a given!

Then why did you include a picture of us playing Auburn?

How can you NOT remember Boogie’s heroics against MSU to tie teh game in regulation against MSU and save us form defeat. The averages you quote are misleading. We have had some nail-biters with MSU – but then we have had some easy blowouts so the average looks relatively big. But we could just as easily have had two losses to MSU in the Calipari era if we had not had a measure of luck and some good bounces along the way.

This is very true and if you are going to use the term Whipping Boy” in your headline, then you need to look at average margin of victory as a major factor in your ranking… I would argue the ranking should be:
      1. Missouri (even though they have only been in the league for a few years – when we play, we kill them)
      2. Auburn
      3. South Carolina
      4. Mississippi State (too many close calls to call them whippings!)
