Is anybody else already looking forward to what shapes up to be one of the most hyped regular season games in the John Calipari era when we open with Duke in November? The two teams may very well be 1 and 2 in the preseason rankings but at a minimum, both teams will certainly be in the Top 5. And that will mark the 7th time in the Calipari tenure that UK will have played in a game between Top 5 teams in the regular season. For comparison, that had only happened 7 times in the 22 YEARS before Calipari arrived. And let us not forget, UK has had some great success in those games (5-2 overall). I think the game against Duke could shape up to be another classic but just to get you excited a little bit more, take a look back at those previous 7 classics:
2011-12: #1 Kentucky 73, #5 North Carolina 72 (Rupp Arena)
-Better known as the Anthony Davis block game
2011-12: #3 Kentucky 69, #4 Louisville 62 (Rupp Arena)
-One of the more forgettable Top 5 matchups in UK history, even against the Cards. What happened in this game?
2013-14: #2 Michigan St 78, #1 Kentucky 74 (Chicago, Champions Classic)
-Those young Cats were not quite ready to handle being the favorites.
2014-15: #1 Kentucky 72, #5 Kansas 40 (Indianapolis, Champions Classic)
-Likely the most dominant beatdown of a Top 5 team in UK history?
2014-15: #1 Kentucky 58, #4 Louisville 50 (Yum Center)
-Doing it in the Yum Center with Tyler Ulis bleeding is what makes this game special.
2015-16: #2 Kentucky 74, #5 Duke 63 (Chicago, Champions Classic)
-The infamous Poythress tooth in the net game.
2016-17: #2 Kansas 79, #4 Kentucky 73 (Rupp Arena)
-We questioned at the time whether that team was elite or not. They proved us wrong.
