BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Just for Comparison’s Sake….

In John Calipari’s 6 years in Lexington, he has only had 1 team that went through the entire non-conference slate undefeated and that was his very first team in 2009-10.  That team suffered an unfortunate loss in March or I think we would consider it in the same realm as the 2012 title team.  Nonetheless, that team was able to defeat all 15 opponents in the non-conference that year, nothing to shake a fist at.  And that team was absolutely dominant at times during that year.  Just for fun though, take a look at the comparison between that team in the non-conference and this team:

2009-10
Record: 15-0
Average Score: 83-64
Games Decided by 10 pts or less: 6
Games Decided by 30 pts or more: 3
Rebounding Margin: +11.5
Total Blocks: 112
vs North Carolina: Won by 2
vs Louisville: Won by 9

2014-15
Record: 12-0 (1 to go)
Average Score: 77-48
Games Decided by 10 pts or less: 1
Games Decided by 30 pts or more: 6
Rebounding Margin: +10.2
Total Blocks: 104
vs North Carolina: Won by 14
vs Louisville: Won by ?????

The 2009-10 team was winning it’s non-conference games by 19 points per game.  This team is winning their’s by 29 points per game.  The first team beat Carolina by 2 and this one beat Carolina by 14.  They rebound at a similar pace and this team blocks shots a little more often than that team.  And certainly this team hasn’t played nearly the amount of close games as that team.

So let me ask you this question, just for a little friendly banter on this Holiday Week.  What if I said I think that this team is at least 10 points better than that team based on these statistics?  Would you consider that a crazy statement?

If you compared the two teams at this point right now (Christmas time frame), I would have to agree with you. Boogie was great but he would have gotten frustrated at the waves of big men coming at him. (It was later in the year that he got some of this under control). Wall and Bledsoe would be great matchups for Andrew and Aaron, then Tyler & Devin. It would be fun to watch but I have to take this team’s experience over that team at Christmas.

No reason to argue, both feams wore the UK uniform so they will both be loved and admired by BBN forever.

Since we are doing what ifs, what if Jodie Meeks stayed? I say with meeks that is the greatest team ever at UK and they don’t lose a game.

Give that 09-10 team a year or two of experience with Cal’s system and 6 summer games together like this team had, and I’d take 09-10.

But to answer the original question, I don’t believe this year’s team is 10 points better than 09-10.

if we must, i would take this years TEAM but i would take some of the individuals from that ’09-10 team over some individuals on this one. that team had at least 2 NBA all stars on it plus bledsoe and p-patt. i mean this TEAM is great, but to this point, i don’t see a future nba all star. that’s not bashing this team at all because i think this team can be, and will be, one of the best of all time… but for arguments sake, i would take a few individuals off the ’09 team, but this 2014 team as a whole.

Perhaps another thing to consider : That 09-10 team was Cal’s first at UK. First in a new system that had yet to even be developed. The recruiting class was put together in about 11 minutes but what a class.

If that class was coming in, 3-4 years into Calipari’s system here…Dear Lord. Add in the 6 preseason games as Clutch mentions above and I would take Wall and Company by 7.

All of the above are good comments. I like the comments about the recruiting class being thrown together and not having the bonus of summer games/practice. We are so blessed to be able to even discuss such comparisons.

At this point in the season, I think the 2015 team probably is 10 points better than 2010. Let’s hope they continue to be at the end of the season. I also think the 2010 team is always a bit overrated because it was such an improvement in talent over the previous 8-10 years. The comparison to what he had been seeing made them seem better than they were. Now we expect greatness every year.

I mean you’re entitled to your opinion, but I’d like to know how they were overrated? They were 35-3, both conference losses were on the road, and lost to a team that had an unconscious shooter in the tournament… plus that team had 5 first round picks… hardly overrated. just ran into a team that made 10 3s on a night that we only made 4… that ’09-10 team was stacked.
