BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: If you could ask Mitch Barnhart some questions…..

barnhart

Now that KSR has gotten pretty big, and Matt Jones and Ryan Lemond have become mega-celebrities in the state of Kentucky, access to the program has increased for our crew.  But, as the Prime Minister of Suck I don’t get that same kind of access.  Which is too bad because I would love to interview Mitch Barnhart.  Popularity has always gone up and down for Mitch, and always will for the athletic director at any school.  But, he has always come off as a nice guy who generally has given honest answers.  Which is why I would love to ask him some questions.  For instance:

FOOTBALL
1) Is there any plan to play BCS teams other than Louisville in the non-conference AND do you think that would be a good idea?

2) Your first year as AD the football team finished 7-5 in the regular season and the team has not improved, record-wise, from that season since then.  Is that disappointing for you or do you think the overall program has improved in your time?

BASKETBALL
1) Even though it turned into a disaster, do you still think Billy Gillispie was the right choice at the time?

2) Did Tubby Smith really find that fax to make Randolph Morris eligible, and if so, who the hell still uses fax machines?

Those would be my 4 questions I would want answered.  What would be your top 3-4 questions you want answered by the AD?  Maybe Matt can ask them next time him and Mitch talk.

    1. Why not go for a coach who could take football to another level and instead have Joker as coach in waiting? I know it’s harder than it sounds, but you’re supposed to be a top notch AD.
    2. Why BCG?
    3. Why not even call Cal when Tubby left?

My 2nd question is too much like BTI’s, so instead I’ll ask: what were the actual circumstances of Tubby leaving?

    Mitch,
A lot of people, including Matt Jones, thought that Cal was a big time cheater. Did you have any reservations about hiring him?

i guess it’s better to hire “known” adulterers to lead young men in your two biggest programs instead of someone you “think” “may” have been involved in cheating in sports…

A lot of people thought Bill Cosby was a nice guy. Opinions change when new information comes out. Coach Cal was thoroughly vetted.

BTI’s second football question is idiotic. Following the 7-5 year, probation destroyed the program for several years. Joker was a disaster but at the same time, following the Woodson/Woodyard/Tamme/Burton/Little years, he was considered a hot commodity. If we hadn’t hired him, somebody else would have. If only we had known he was an in-over-my-head head coach.

People seem to forget that Joker was good here as an offensive coordinator. I know I was excited that he was going to be our new head coach at the time. It just turned out that he wasn’t a good head coach.

With all the money coming into the University and significant upgrades going on all around campus….WHY CAN’T WE GET AN ON-CAMPUS BASKETBALL ARENA BUILT???

Where would we even put an on campus arena? The campus is cramped as is, and parking is already an issue.

could probably squeeze it in over by the football stadium off alumni and share parking with football… just get rid of those crappy greg page apartments

    1. How close are we to alcohol sales at UK/SEC games and are you in favor of that? Isn’t it true UL makes a fortune off these sales.
    2. What do you see as your biggest accomplishment and biggest failure as AD at UK.
    3. Does it bother you that the fans care 100 times and will pay 100 times more for men’s football and basketball than all other sports put together? If that is true should we put 100 times more resources in those sports than other sports?
    4. Given his choice in questions, how does BTI still have a job?

Unpopular opinion here, but I think BTI is one of the better writers on this site. He writes with a creativity that the others lack. Now, there isn’t as much humor there, but this column requires creativity — it’s not easy to come up with something unique every day; the others have the easy job of presenting news (in the most ridiculous manner possible). The news is great, but I am always genuinely interested with BTI’s posts because they give you something new to think about besides a rehashing of the same boring offseason news. In addition, BTI’s knowledge of UK sports history is unparalleled on this site. Keep up the good work.

I thought we heard some rumors/possible news that Kentucky was working on games with Cinncinatti in football. I don’t know for sure but I think I heard this not too long ago. Also, I could see them attempting to bring back the IU series if the SEC requires two non-conference power five games.

    1. How come there isn’t a student “point” system in place that rewards students for going to games in all sports when it comes to getting football and basketball tickets?

    2. Why was Cal noticeably quiet during the Rupp Arena basketball upgrades? If he would have wanted it, I think the legislature would have made it happen.

    3. What’s the timeframe for a new baseball stadium?

    4. What is the ten year plan for the next upgrade of Commonwealth Stadium?

Cal was quiet publicly because it’s not really his place to lobby for that. He is a coach, not a politician or spokesman. Cal can sway the masses, which would have put undue pressure on the situation which was already full of issues. I would not have been publicly involved in that either if I was Cal. Millions of good reasons not to be involved and very few good reasons to be involved.

Respectfully disagree with you Bluebloodtoo. As coach of UK Basketball your job is absolutely to be a politician and spokesman. His silence was loud and clear. His silence showed exactly how he and UK felt about the idea. If UK and Cal felt strongly about it, he certainly would have made that thought known.

BTI, although fax machines are not common now, they were pretty prevalent when the disputed fax was “found”. Common sense for a KSR intern is not so prevalent…

#3b – Why did ticket prices go up at the same time you increased advertising income in Rupp? related to #3a or Cal’s constant contract re-negotiations?

    (1) During Joker’s second year you said the fans who were not happy with him as coach had a “separate agenda” from wins and losses. What agenda were you referring to?

    (2) Given that these same fans were largely shown to be correct about Joker, do you regret the above statement?

      +1
The Year Joker was announced as head coach was the same year I gave up my season tickets. I knew what was coming, and I did not want to be a part of his buyout plan with my season tickets, parking, and donations. If anyone, had an agenda, other than wins or losses, it was MB. No AD would have been happy with the results after the first year. No AD would have kept Joker after that 2nd year. He built the program that lost to WKU, twice. The third year of employment, how did he possibly rationalize the third year was going to change? It was no other agenda, other than, not wanting to see the program plummet to an all time low. MB let it happen. It was his agenda. It was not ours.
