BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Hell, Even Billy Gillispie Beat Tennessee at Home

Calling something a “must-win” game always has seemed dumb to me.  First of all, does calling something that change the mentality of the actual players playing in the game.  I would hope that each player wants to win a game at 100% every time they play.  And what makes playing a game like tonight against Tennessee more of a “must-win” than when we played Utah Valley to open the season.  I think that was a must-win too.  If we had lost that game, it would still be hanging on our resume as a serious negative.

With that said, I do think the game is incredibly important.  The Cats are not some mortal lock to make the NCAA Tournament and a loss tonight would start to make some people nervous.  Plus, after that dreadful performance on Saturday, the Cats have to show some life and that they are still invested in trying to make something out of this season.

But here is my angle: BILLY GILLISPIE BEAT TENNESSEE.  And not just any Tennessee team but a 3rd ranked Tennessee team.  That was probably Bruce Pearl’s best team in Knoxville and UK still found a way to win with an 11-seeded team.  If that team could do it, this team better do it.

So you think calling a game a “must-win” is dumb but you also think this game is “incredibly important”. I wonder if it might just be possible that the folks who call it a “must-win” are making the EXACT SAME POINT.
