BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Dak Prescott, the Biggest UK Killer?

Sometimes you have to recognize an opponent when he is great against you.  And frankly, after watching Dak Prescott for the past 3 full seasons, he is one of the better SEC quarterbacks that I can remember.  He will never get the credit he is due because he plays for Mississippi State and not Alabama, but he hurt UK worse over the course of his career than anybody I can remember.  Take a look at his yearly damage against the Cats, including his 3-0 record:

Senior (Loss 42-16)
25-35, 348 yards, 3 TD, 1 INT
13 carries, 117 yards, 3 TD

Junior (Loss 45-31)
18-33, 216 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
18 carries, 88 yards, 2 TD

Sophomore (Loss 28-22)
23-34, 268 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT
16 carries, 33 yards

Freshman (Loss 27-14)
7 carries, 32 yards

COMBINED (Loss 142-83)
66-102, 832 yards, 6 TD, 2 INT
54 carries, 270 yards, 5 TD

That is quite a good stat line for Prescott.  I think an argument can be made that he hurt UK worse than any player in the last 20 years.  For comparisons sake, look at what Tim Tebow did against the Cats in his 4 years against UK.  And Tebow is a good comparison because he played sparingly during his freshman year, much of the same way Prescott did.

Freshman: 1-2, 12 yards, 6 carries, 73 yards
Sophomore: 18-26, 256 yards, 4 TD, 20 carries, 78 yards
Junior: 11-15, 180 yards, 2 TD, 1 INT, 9 carries, 48 yards, 2 TD
Senior: 5-10, 103 yards, 1 TD, 16 carries, 123 yards, 2 TD
COMBINED: 35-53, 551 yards, 7 TD, 1 INT, 51 carries, 322 yards, 4 TD

Prescott threw for nearly 300 more yards and rushed for 5 less yards.  Both guys accounted for 11 touchdowns.  At worst, you have to say Prescott hurt the Cats as much as Tebow.  I would argue he hurt them more because he had so much less around him.

But I want to know your thoughts.  Has there been another UK football opponent that has hurt the Cats worse over 4 years than Dak Prescott?  You tell me the stories of the players during any era that burned UK year after year.

You should try to find 1 decent player UK has had success against. Finding players that have had success against UK football shouldn’t be too hard.

That is a lot of losses. When it comes to Kentucky football, losses is everywhere you look. You don’t need no phd in statistics to figure that out

You probably will be adding the name Joshua Dobbs to that list before its over.

The vandy game is a toss up at best, since their Head coach took over the defense they are looking alot better. I would like to think UK will win, but at the moment it’s too close to pick.

Stat wise..yes. But Tebow was much more because those were our “GOOD” years.

We are the problem, not the other team’s players. If our defense was prepared and we had the players, we don’t have things like this on KSR. The other teams only take what we give them.
It is a shame we have people filling space on how, and how often, other teams beat us. As if we did not already know from the weekly beat downs.
This team has many problems, and they have been exposed. Defense, or in our case, the absolute total lack thereof, is what is killing this team. You can bitch about the offense all you want, but our defense does not effect the other teams we play as bad as it effects every phase of our game.
A poor defense makes our offense play from behind, having to score fast and often just to try and catch up. We lose the ability to control the clock, we lose the ability to have good field position.
There is so much wrong with this staff, it is unreal.
Our QB is ok folks. It is the Defense and the DC killing this team. If Stoops does not take steps to make this change, BTI, will continue to write the obvious after every game we get hammered, and there will be several more this season, unfortunately.

The common denominator here is Dan Mullen. He was tebow’s coordinator and coaches Dak now. He is the one we got to find a way to stop!

While I agree that our defense has been lackluster (especially the last 3 games, in particular), it is not the defense as a whole. It is our defensive line and linebackers. Our ability to contain the run is absolutely horrendous. We have given up 15 rushing scores on the season (more than 2 per game) & 7 passing touchdowns (1 per game – respectable).

Secondly, our defense has allowed opposing quarterbacks to rush for 321 yards on the season compared to our quarterbacks scampering for 169 yards.

Thirdly, our defense only has 12 sacks on the season compared to Towles being sacked 20 times. That is absurd when you consider the teams we have played; but also is a poor reflection of our offensive line.

Finally, our defense has only caused 8 turnovers in 7 games thus far – again, not very impressive when you consider the teams we have played.

It is imperative that we contain Dobbs on Saturday. Their should be a spy dedicated to him the entire game, in my opinion. Our defensive line has to get a push and create a little pressure forcing him to make throws that he might not usually make. Hopefully our guys play with a sense of urgency and find a way to limit his scrambling and contain. As always, go cats.

It seems regardless of who the coach is UK football has a penchant for making some opposing quarterbacks look like the greatest who ever play the game.

Peyton Manning went undefeated versus Ky and had 523 yards passing and 5 td’s his senior year. Couch was great but UT still came out on top thanks to Manning.

look at any running QB over the past 10-15 years and I imagine you will see similar stats (vs UK) to those of prescott and tebow … it seems that UK has never been able to stop a running QB .. and before we go too far on this prescott – tebow comparison, let’s remember that tebow was knocked out of the game his senior season
