BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Calipari, the Billion Dollar Coach

Maybe John Calipari leaves the University of Kentucky someday with 1 national title.  Maybe he wins more.  For many of the fans, whatever that final number is will be Calipari’s legacy at Kentucky.  But if Cal had emphasized anything from Day 1 and never backed down, he has emphasized that success on the college level is not his greatest priority.  Setting the players up for their future careers in basketball is his #1 goal.  After digging through the numbers a little, I think Calipari can be quite proud of the following fact:

Adding past earnings with money already on signed contracts, Calipari players from Kentucky now have over ONE BILLION DOLLARS in NBA contracts.

A breakdown:

John Wall: 71.61 million (159.7 million remaining)
Demarcus Cousins: 61.19 million (18.06 million remaining)
Enes Kanter: 52.32 million (20.57 million remaining)
Eric Bledsoe: 46.68 million (29.50 million remaining)
Anthony Davis: 45.31 million (76.30 million remaining)
Brandon Knight: 36.27 million (43.89 million remaining)
Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: 33.76 million (26.0 million remaining)
Patrick Patterson: 27.14 million (10.64 million remaining)
Nerlens Noel: 14.33 million (4.19 million remaining)
Karl-Anthony Towns: 11.66 million (6.22 million remaining)
Julius Randle: 9.40 million (4.15 million remaining)
Terrence Jones: 8.43 million
Willie Cauley-Stein: 6.95 million (8.4 million remaining)
Archie Goodwin: 5.72 million
James Young: 5.25 million
D’Aaron Fox: 4.61 million (5.41 million remaining)
Trey Lyles: 4.58 million (5.80 million remaining)
Devin Booker: 4.35 million (5.63 million remaining)
Marquis Teague: 3.22 million
Jamal Murray: 3.21 million (6.86 million remaining)
Malik Monk: 2.90 million (3.45 million remaining)
Daniel Orton: 2.89 million
Bam Adebayo: 2.49 million (2.96 million remaining)
Deandre Liggins: 2.25 million (0.03 million remaining) *signed 2-year deal last week, terms not disclosed
Josh Harrellson: 1.71 million
Darius Miller: 1.66 million (4.31 million remaining)
Doron Lamb: 1.44 million
Skal Labissiere: 1.19 million (2.85 million remaining)
Andrew Harrison: 0.95 million (2.85 million remaining)
Tyler Ulis: 0.92 million (2.85 million remaining)
Aaron Harrison: 0.90 million
Dakari Johnson: 0.82 million (1.38 million remaining)
Alex Poythress: 0.07 million (2.32 million remaining)

TOTAL: $476.18 MILLION ($454.32 million remaining on contracts)
COMBINED: $930.5 MILLION

Player/Team Options Remaining
Wall: 46.87 million
Davis: 28.75 million
Kanter: 18.62 million
Fox: 14.49 million
Kidd-Gilchrist: 13.00 million
Monk: 9.38 million
Adebayo: 8.56 million
Towns: 7.84 million
Patterson: 5.71 million
Murray: 4.44 million
Labissiere: 2.34 million
Ulis: 1.68 million
TOTAL: $161.68 MILLION

Keep a couple things in mind too as you look at those numbers:

  1. Karl Towns hasn’t signed a new contract off his rookie deal.  His 2nd contract will be massive.  Same goes for Devin Booker, who will likely be in for a hefty payday in his 2nd contract.
  2. Deandre Liggins contract he just signed has not been released.
  3. None of Calipari’s players are 30 years old yet.
  4. Calipari is not done.  He will add 2-4 players each year to the NBA.

I understand that many fans are constantly frustrated by the infatuation and focus on the NBA rather than college results by Calipari.  But 50 years from now, you will have to say the tons of millionaires that Calipari coached will be his lasting legacy.  And calling him a BILLION DOLLAR COACH has to be the greatest compliment you could give the guy.

This is all fine and good, I’m happy for Cal! Sure would be nice to have a few more titles as well.

No mention of the anti Cal article done by Clay Travis either. This homer blog does not do anything objective. Please see below this awesome and accurate article.

Thanks for sharing! That article is spot on! Cal needs a title very very soon because the fans are growing tired of his antics. I love Cal and think he’s a good coach. Hopefully he will win us at least one more before he’s done!

I am more than happy for these players, but:
No UK History – No Billions
No UK Program – No Billions
No BBN Fans – No Billions
It’s not just about the Players First…

Man this would be great news if I was a NBA fan and not a NCAA basketball fan.

Come on man, lets be real! These guys would all be making money no matter where they went to school. Lets not pretend that it was Cal’s ‘coaching’ or the UK name and not these guy’s effort that got them there.

Can’t we just root for them because they went to UK. Isn’t that enough?

This is the problem with our program. Everyone needs a boss and Cal doesn’t have one. The university needs to inform Cal that winning is his job! His social engineering project is truly admirable but can not be the top priority.

Cal’s boss is the AD, not that he needs one. I for one am happy with all he has done for this program and if you were around for the last two coaches and Sutton you should be two.

I am not sure why some of you have such disdain for UK players that are doing well in the pros. I root for them because they are UK players … nuff said.

And lets be real … most of the complainers on this site are NOT UK fans … they are fakers trying to pretend to be UK fans to make us look bad. We need to put a stop to this.

Well…the players certainly care about UK when they leave, as they’ve shown time and time again. They sell us to recruits. They wear UK gear everywhere. They come back whenever they can. I’m not gonna call you anything, but as a UK fan my whole life, I follow each and every one of our former players and truly enjoy their successes.

4ever blue I’m a fan of UK basketball. But I don’t watch or care about the NBA. After they take that KY jersey off they’re not benefiting BBn anymore and I’m finished with them.

For this day and time that’s what alot of young players will see that and think UK will get me there so that I will also get that money but in all reality its up to the player himself he has to have the desire to be coached and the heart to put that work in

  12. OldSchoolCat
    11:50 am February 19, 2018 Permalink

He has stated over and over that winning championships is not his job. The regular season is no longer exciting as we break in a whole new team every year and play a terrible home schedule. We need a mix of instant pros, 3 or 4 year players and KY kids that will stay and add leadership.

If the Cats don’t win an NC this year, it will be six tournaments since they last won the Championship. Possibly three straight years of no Final Four. At what point does the fan base start putting pressure on the school and Coach to change his focus where these things matter more than moving players to the NBA?

LOL at you people who think a kid from out of state that shows up on campus in August, leaves in April and spends most of his time in-between traveling with the team really care about UK.

You already have an example with the ’96 team, their coach goes to the arch rival, flips off UK fans and who have you seen them more with: Pitino in Miami or in Lexington? And those guys were campus for 3 years in most cases.

These NBA talent has to do with both KY and Cal. For example, I don’t think Marquis Teague goes pro or Dakari Johnson goes pro if they were at another school with the same season as they had. That is called the KY Effect. On the flip side, I don’t think players like Charles Matthews, Marcus Lee or even Humphries leaves UK if it wasn’t for the Calipari Effect. Meaning, Cal’s philosophy is to get these players out the door and that means playing the freshman over the veterans. Willis was a whole lot better than Gabriel at the beginning of the season, so why play Gabriel over Willis? Because he wanted to get Gabriel out the door or playing the twins more than booker and ulis, why? Because “He owed it to the twins for coming back a 2nd season,” really. That is my problem with Cal, he doesn’t always play the BEST players, he plays the players with the most NBA potential. If Enes was eligible to play, Josh Harrellson would never have seen the court and never received an NBA contract and that’s why Humphries left early, because he knew another NBA caliber talent was coming in and he was going to ride the bench because he knew Cal would stick to Richards despite Humphries being the better player at the beginning of the season. I watch the NBA Cats if nothing else is on but I don’t care to watch them. I am a UK Fan, not a NBA fan. Cal’s legacy is already comical and everyone is just laughing at us and laughing at him to have all of those players in the NBA and only 1 title and that’s because it was a once in a decade player. I am curious if they do change the 1 and done rule. Then let’s see how long Cal will stay here, I bet he leaves thereafter and use the well, I can’t make millionaires anymore excuse when in reality, he is not an X’s and O’s coach. Talent can get you to the Final Four but it takes coaching to win Championships. I don’t care about how many FF he’s had, we hang banners for NC and the way things are going with recruiting, I will be curious to see what he does come March and next year with all of the talent heading to Duke. I do however think this team has a chance for a Final Four run. We have the talent, it’s just the players are not buying in and playing/trying for 40 minutes. If we get beat the 1st round, it wouldn’t surprise me but if we make it to the Final Four, it also won’t surprise me (depending on the brackets). But I don’t think Cal wins another title. Everyone keeps saying everyone is coming back. Knox is gone, Diallo is gone (that’s why he keeps playing him), Vanderbilt is gone and SGA and with a deep run and great performance, maybe even Gabriel & Richards.

What about this year? Cal is gonna treat Knox like hes a top 5 pick.
