BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: Best 50-Game Stretch in UK History?

USATSI_8971973_154849602_lowres

Let’s assume that Kentucky beats a very depleted Ohio State team on Saturday.  That would give the Cats a 48th win in their last 50 games, which is really an amazing feat.  Now, while I have said John Calipari deserves consideration for UK’s greatest coach (not career but coach) there is something that Adolph Rupp did that Calipari has not: win 49 games out of 50.  In a weird twist, it took Rupp 3 years to complete such a feat because UK didn’t play a season in 1952-53, but nonetheless there was a stretch of 50 games where UK has only lost once.

But does that make it the most impressive stretch in UK history, or does this 50 games stretch (assuming an Ohio State win) deserve consideration.  A little comparison of any UK streak of at least 47 wins over the course of 50 games:

1952-1955 (Final 24 games of 1952 season, 25 games of 1954 season, First game of 1955 season)
Record: 49-1
Wins vs. Ranked Teams: 4
Losses: #10 St. Johns (NCAA Tournament)

2014-2015 (39 games of 2015 season, First 11 games of 2016 season)
Record: 48-2 (assuming win over Ohio State)
Wins vs. Ranked Teams: 8
Average Score: 75-56
Losses: #3 Wisconsin (Final Four), at UCLA

1948-1949 (Final 16 games of 1948 season, 34 games of 1949 season)
Record: 48-2
Wins vs. Ranked Teams: no rankings
Losses: St. Louis, Loyola (Chicago)

2011-2012 (Final 11 games of 2011 season, First 39 games of 2012 season)
Record: 47-3
Wins vs. Ranked Teams: 16
Average Score: 76-61
Losses: #9 UCONN (Final Four), at Indiana, Vanderbilt (SEC Tourney)

1996-1997 (Final 34 games of 1996 season, First 16 games of 1997 season)
Record: 47-3
Wins vs. Ranked Teams: 11
Average Score: 90-66
Losses: #25 Mississippi St (SEC Tourney), #20 Clemson, at Ole Miss

2003-2004 (Final 27 games of 2003 season, First 23 games of 2004 season)
Record: 45-5
Wins vs. Ranked Teams: 15
Average Score: 75-62
Losses: #9 Marquette (Elite 8), #20 Louisville, Georgia, at Vanderbilt, at Georgia
