BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: An Underappreciated Game in the Cal Era

It’s hard to imagine this whole John Calipari thing at Kentucky not working 6 years in.  We have a national title, 3 Final Fours, and the potential for an undefeated season.  But let’s not forget that Cal was still not a 100% fan favorite even 2 years into his tenure.  Obviously the talent had increased ten fold in his tenure at that point, but he had suffered a highly disappointing loss in the 2010 NCAA Tournament and let’s not forget that the 2011 regular season was very difficult, with the Cats struggling to win any conference road game.  Then they nearly get upset in the first round of the tournament to Princeton.  At that point in his tenure, I think some fans were not sold on Calipari and this whole one and done thing.  And then of course he had to play a rematch with the team that crippled him in 2010: West Virginia.

Think about if UK had lost that game in 2011 to West Virginia.  Does that change anything that happened in 2012 and that national title?  Most likely not.  But think about what the fans opinion of Calipari would have been that entire offseason if he had lost that game.  You could argue that West Virginia game might have been the most important in his tenure.  If they had lost the next game to Ohio State, fans would have been OK because the Buckeyes were the #1 overall seed.  But if they had lost to WVU, it would have been a tense offseason.  Alas, Cal’s team pulled away late and beat the Huggins group and the rest is history.  Relive that great game today as we get prepared for another great one on Thursday.

I think it’s a stretch to say Cal was still not a 100% fan favorite even 2 years into his tenure. Of course there will always be those who don’t like whoever the coach is, but to make it seem like the fanbase was beginning to turn on him because of “one and done” is kind of silly. After so many year of Tubby and Billy Clyde, I for one was ecstatic to just be competitive with the best teams again.

even last year when we strugged on the road fans were calling in saying “i don’t know if this one and done is gonna work”.
and we had already won a title.

a lot of people were trying to say that 2012 was the exception, not the rule… glad to say i was not one of those morons. 2013 was definitely the exception to the rule under Calipari.

Just was reminded at how freakin’ good Brandon Knight was as a college PG. OMG, he was like the perfect guy to be running your team.

during march he was great, during the SEC we lost so many games because he had no conscience and would fire at will.

So, what would the feelings have been if Cal’s first team had beaten WV? Probably (as Cal himself) would have won the national championship if not for the WV game where shots were not falling. After mediocre years with Tubby and Billy G., how could any UK fan legitimately complain about Cal? There is nobody better for the UK position than Cal. (Pitino a distant 2nd, nobody else even close.) And, (not that it matters) I’ve been saying that for at least 12 years to anybody that would listen.

Joe Hall, Rick Pitino, Tubby Smith, etc. did not have a 100% of fan support.
