BTI’s Rants and Ramblings: 15 Years Since Kentucky’s Last Buzzer Beater

Kentucky has had a lot of memorable, game closing shots over the last 15 years.  John Wall had a couple, Jodie Meeks had a couple, Aaron Harrison had three in 2 weeks.  Julius Randle against LSU also comes to mind.  Brandon Knight against Princeton and Ohio State.  But, believe it or not, Kentucky hasn’t had a true buzzer-beating shot in 15 years.  A shot where the horn goes off before the shot goes through.  And this weekend brings us back to the place where that shot took place.  Erik Daniels lucky lay-in off a deflection as time expired kept the Cats undefeated in SEC play and the fans in Starkville fuming.  UK was likely outplayed in that game and very fortunate to win but Daniels was in the right place at the right time, as he so often was, and UK went home winners.

Hopefully the Cats won’t need that kind of luck this weekend but it is interesting that UK has been beat a few times since that time at the buzzer but not had to win a game at the buzzer like this:

Don’t forget Sparks’ rim-rattling 3 against Mich St in the 2005 regional final, and Boogie’s rebound putback against Miss St in the 2010 SEC Tournament Final. I know those shots sended those games into overtimes but u said shots that were made just ahead of the buzzer, as these 2 certainly were…..

These are the exact shots that came to my mind as well. I’ll never forget the eternity that went by as Sparks’ shot touched every part of the rim at least a time or two.

The refs spent 20 minutes watching video trying to make his toe go across the 3-pt line, and totally ignored the fact that he had been fouled on the shot. If they had called that foul, we go to the FF. But what really got us was the lack of rebounding in OT. One of two FF’s that Tubby should have had.

Keldon Johnson hit a buzzer beater just this season. Half court even.

That is a really weird stat to think about. Because I would have named off all of the “close” ones without ever thinking about it not being a true buzzer beater.

I’d like to know what their total of game winning shots that come with under 5 seconds left are, in that 15 year span.

Now THAT would be a fun one to research. We’ve had several of those during the Cal era.

He’s talking about game-winners, specifically. We’ve had several buzzer beaters that sent games to overtime, but it’s hard to believe we haven’t had a true buzzer-beating game-winner since then. I was a freshman at UK, and Blanding I got really damn loud when he made that tip-in
