Breaking: Willy T Is Falling Apart

IMG_20140808_134402

William T. Young Library is home to some of my worst memories in college.  I try to avoid it at all costs, but without WiFi for another week, Willy T has been forced to become homebase for KSR.

While going through pictures and interviews from today’s media day, I was a interrupted by a sound that I first believed to be a thunderstorm.  What I thought was a thunderstorm was actually the sound of a gigantic chandelier crashing to the floor of the 5th floor rotunda.

A fellow student that covers the Cats, Lyndsey Gough, was in the 2nd floor, directly beneath the rotunda.  She thought it was an earthquake when the lights went out immediately.

Luckily, no one was hurt or injured.  Maintenance crews were calling it an “engineering nightmare.”  One person even alleged that they delayed the opening of Willy T, for fear that the piece was an unstable.

See Mom, I told you nothing good comes from hanging out at the library.

UPDATE: According to the UK Instagram account, the chandelier was taken down yesterday for maintenance, but someone clearly didn’t secure it properly once it was back up. That someone is also very lucky no one got hurt today.

As a student at UK, that particular area was once Clifton Circle, which had a series of sinkholes. The library was built on top of one of those sinkholes and the construction company could not fill the base with concrete.

As a civil engineer who knows the engineers who designed the foundation to Willy T, I am here to tell you that you probably shouldn’t repeat what you hear unless you understand it. There are karst caves all over the area (including the rest of campus), yes. However, There was only one core of Willy T that ran into trouble with this. So you are right, they did not fill the base with concrete like a typical foundation, because they built a structural slab foundation instead, but only in that corner. The library isn’t sinking. If you really think engineers aren’t aware of the surrounding geology during the design of a multi-million dollar structure, you are clueless. The chandelier falling is probably just due to shitty craftsmanship.

in the 2nd floor? the piece was an unstable? I’m thinking more time in the library might be needed.

Always gotta be one grammar police in the mix. Pretty sure those errors happened bc he was in a rush to post it since it just happened, not bc he doesn’t know the proper way to construct those sentences. Must be annoying being so perfect and being forced to live with imperfect people.

Thank you sir. I was a bit flustered running around a library that had just had had thousands of pieces of glass shatter on the floor

Shouldn’t you have capitalized the name Claiborne?

Good thing that happened in one of the few spots where people don’t hang out/study very much. (Or at least in my day).

5th floor rotunda is actually one of the most popular places for group studying, especially with frats/sororities etc. If class had been in session it would have been a disaster on front page news all over the world

“Luckily, no one was hurt or injured.”

But was anyone wounded, bruised, damaged, disfigured, harmed, contused, lacerated, marred or impaired?

According to the UK instagram account they purposely brought it down yesterday for maintenance. Seems like someone made an error when securing it back up there.
