Well… it looks like the Rupp Arena renovations is heading back to the drawing board… If UK is willing to commit over 300 million dollars over 30 years, could UK support a new on campus arena?

Looks like LCC bit of more than they can chew, with 3 years left on the Cats lease LCC is in trouble. Wouldn’t be surprised if UK took their ball and went home, literally, and drew up plans to build an arena on campus, 3 years left is enough time to get the ball rolling and if anything else force LCC to do a better job in getting Rupp renovated.

While I like the idea of an on-campus arena, where would they put it? As far as I’m aware, they don’t own any land big enough for it (other than the field between Commonwealth and Nicholasville Road).

Interesting letter despite the use of the obviously flawed poll. It sounds like Lexington city has been not been able to provide a firm financing plan.

As much as I want Rupp renovated, I appreciate the reasoned response of President Capilouto, especially if the City and plan is as fiscally “shifty” as he suggests. Any chance he’ll join the show tomorrow? What’s the odds that Senator Stivers suddenly is free from vacation?

This is BULL$HIT the confusion with what’s going on with RUPP and the convention center and surrounding area. The thing that pisses me off is all the state money that has been dumped into the state ghetto that is loserville. Lexington deserves to have new arena, convention center and revamped surrounding area downtown. Lexington is far and away the nicest city in Kentucky it’s time the money goes where it makes the most sense.

Louisville is a great city, I live in Northern Kentucky and 1-2 weekends a year my girlfriend and I will stay in Louisville. Could you compare the Yum Center Deal to the proposed Rupp Deal. KY is willing to pay over 10 million per year for around 25 days. How much is UL paying per year? From what I understand they play all women’s and men’s home games there and have a deal where they get the arena 2 or 3 days before every basketball game (causing Yum center not able to have events / concerts). I doubt UL is paying Yum center 10 million per year and they get way more than 25 days.

Seems like he was also taking a shot at you and Oscar too Matt. You both have been publically taking shots at UK for not publicly supporting it and saying UK has no lease agreement for the future. It says right in the letter that UK had agreed to a new lease for 10.7 million for 30 years, that is their financial support for the project. They just cant come out and speak publically in support of spending state money on a project because they are a public university and they have academic needs for that money and cant look like they are putting sports ahead of academics. Also they cant publically support it when the legislatures are against it and they have to stay on the legislatures good side since they dictate how much money UK gets. And also they cant publically support it when they public is all for it. So basically he said UK wasn’t going to get involved in the politics of it because it will be a bad look for them but their “support” is there in the 10+ million for 30 years.

There will never be an on campus arena at UK. This has been decided already. If UK were to build its own arena with corporate money it would be on agricultural land UK owns near the interstates. This has been explored for years and deemed unworkable for all the parties that would be stake holders. Rupp will be renovated when UK gets the deal it wants. UK wants more financial benefit and less responsibility to foot the bill. UK is right to play hardball. They will get what they want as the convention center is too important to Lexingtons economy. Be patient. This will happen.

Too much arrogance on both sides. Part of me wishes the Lexington Center would just say, “OK then. Sorry UK. Your lease is up. You’re out as of right now.”

That will never happen. UK holds all the cards in this negotiation as they should. The business interests involved wants UK to shoulder much of the financial risk.

Can you further explain this Matt. Is UK saying they are against the renovation or just that they cant “publicly” support state money going to the renovation? or that they cant publicly take a side in this issue? or They just straight up don’t like Lexington’s financial plan of renovating it? or is Lexington wanting UK to give more than 10.7 million thus they are against it? or are they saying they had a good plan heading into the general assembly then Lexington asked for more from the state at last minute and that’s why the general assembly didn’t support it? or does the general assembly just not support it at all even with UK’s 10 million a year support?

UK originally was asking for $65 million and permission to increase the hotel tax rate. The House passed that. Stivers, leading the senate wouldn’t approve it and complained about the increase in the hotel tax rate. Because of that the city came back with a new proposal asking for $80 million to offset the losses from not being able to increase the hotel tax.

UK has plenty of space next to Commonwealth Stadium to build a brand new arena. This would open up more revenue streams as they could charge for basketball parking passes around Commonwealth Stadium and the university could use the new arena to host concerts/events. All of this money would go to the university, not the city. It just makes more sense.

I called in, was cut short assuming because of Palumbo’s call. But my point was this, there is a vast amount of ignorance about this UK football program that prominently displays itself within the comments section of KSR football posts. People bashing UK Football because Stoops only won 2 in his first year, folks fail to realize how terrible the team really was in his debut season. Bear Bryant couldn’t have won 4 games with that talent. “Fans” also assume that since Brooks and especially Joker never saw elite success, that Stoops can’t. I’d like to remind people that Brooks beat #1 LSU recruiting way less talented players than Stoops did in his FIRST YEAR. Albeit Brooks was arguably better at the X’s and O’s at that time than Stoops is now. The jury is still out on Stoops and co. and their coaching ability, considering it’s been one season. But I believe in these guys and will reserve ALL of my judgement until the end of next season. If we haven’t seen on field success by the end of Stoops 3rd year, then maybe some criticism is in order. But damn it, keep your mouths shut until then. Give the man some time to develop HIS players and get rid of Joker’s.
(Also, on field success does not mean winning 8 games. It means competing and now getting blown out and being noticeably better than year 1 and 2.)

Fan Base has been fair to Stoops so far !! Remember he was given a bad hand last year !! But we could have won maybe 3 or 4 games … So for 2-10 after a 2-10 season!! I think everyone has been very positive about Stoops!!

The original request for proposal for Rupp and the Convention Center were separate projects. The winning design team pursued both projects and sold the selection committee on the idea that coordination between the two projects would be more seamless if one design team did both projects. I would bet they reduced their fee siting less required coordination with another team. There are advantages to keeping them together for design and for the city, maybe not for UK.
